So based on above^^^ we are possibly looking at 1 in every 30-50 people in the country infected 😱

Apparently the Chinese govt cover up or under reported the death rate otherwise they would have chaos. The information from the social media circulation is very lengthy and rather "detail". 🤔

That is why when I mentioned earlier in this thread that whoever have managed to contain or to control the virus first should be the one that is suspicious.

I heard it was Jimmy Saville behind it, helped out by Lord Lucan and Elvis.

They’re all still alive, you know. Living in a Bond Villain style lair in Wuhan, next to the market, where they conduct experiments on bats which they then force feed to local children

But rouge agent then wanted to sell it to CIA

Did they catch him red handed?

The person that "leaked" the information was a person working on the project but did not say he witnessed the drop.

Oh ya, apparently CIA wanted it to try it on South Americans ... why I don't know.

I remember when this used to be a "wheres-the-coronavirus-were-all-going-to-die-conspiracy-thread". Those were the days, they still had toilet paper in the shops, and tins

@danstw

Maybe half that.

World confirmed cases just hit 400k.

UK report 422 deaths now. Recent growth around 22% daily for the past few days.

Fortunately the new cases figure is going up around 17% daily, hopefully the "please stay out of pubs" wishy washy request around a week ago, actually had some effect. With yesterday's change, that reduction in daily growth should continue. This might put us in a slightly better place than Italy, when its all done.

Spain is not looking cool, though.

So there you go X-Files stuff

Time for the mods to act. Not everyone knows to ignore this guy.

Anyway, my heavily qualified post about the ExCel field hospital turned out to be right. Scary times.

@nickc , advice from today’s press conference is specifically for couples in your situation to either only use one home, or to stay apart for the foreseeable, so you’ve called it correctly. Hard times for you… my thoughts are with you.

Edit: and thanks

So, I'm in the same position with my son being at his mums currently.
I was hoping to see him before his 14th birthday next weekend (he normally shares his time about 50/50, very informal and friendly) but I missed this evenings briefing - was it mentioned...?

No, my comment, and the press conference question, was about couples in different homes, not parents (ex-couples separated) and their kids. Advice yesterday was to keep contact with kids that you are joint carer for… you’d need to check with gov.uk to see if that is still the case.

Why, exactly, do we have to moderate chewkw's comments? If you think he's a crank, just ignore him and move on.

I'm not saying I agree with him, btw.

Because fake news is dangerous in these times. He knows what he is posting is nonsense. But it doesn’t need to be deleted. It can just be moderated. Flagging it as likely to be fake news would do the job better than deleting.

Or even better, he can edit it himself and make it crystal clear that it’s fantasy for the benefit of casual readers.

Because fake news is dangerous in these times

The true news is bad enough.

As for numbers infected @danstw It isn't knowable. The infectivity suggests that the eventual proportion to be infected (all susceptible) may be 80% if lifelong immunity is imparted (1 - 1/Case reproductive number), Since the case reproductive number, R0 is thought to be 2 but may be much higher - 5, you get up to 80%.

In an epidemic phase, what matters is the doubling time. Epidemics slow because 1) they run out of susceptibles or 2) transmission goes down due to behaviour. The world chose 2). It was the right decision.

Wait for webex to offer free meetings and we can have an STW virtual tea. The camera forces you to get dressed 😉

So... new message appears to be
“Stay at home - unless you fancy a nice trip out in the car for a walk”
“Stay at home - Well actually go to work”
I despair. Swaledale is going to be like a bank holiday again this weekend. This is a total shambles.
But it’s ok. New hospital for London.

No bread, no meat, no tins, no bog roll, no hand-wash limitrd fruit and veg in my local big Tesco thisc evening

Flame awsy but i worked today. We are going to skeleton staff till friday then its goodnight. No point in anyone being there when the wage bill is 5x the turnover. Shame as bottles sales to supermarkets are the best they have ever been. Rebellion brewery missing the point and doing a drive through beer takeaway encouraging people out and about, we are doing a handful of local drops, pre psid by cc over the phone but its pitiful and simply a goodwill gesture

Real news: If the virus had gone unchecked with the same doubling time there would have been an estimated 3.6 million deaths in around 10 weeks. No matter what nonsense is spread about China they have set an impressive precedent of containment in this issue. Pity it comes mainly because they have significant abrogation of human rights but you win some, you lose some.

To resume UK situation :

1000s of people out of work but need to wait end of April to get 80% salary.

1000s of people still going to work in cramped sites and public transport

1000s of people shopping till they drop.

WTF??

I am quite scared to be honest, I dont want to die.

I set up a business 3 months ago after buying some bicycle building equipment now im probably going to not be able to pay the rent in 2 months. Scary on both fronts.

Every press story in the tabloids seems to convey death is likely .

That's what you get from reading tabloids. You need to change your press sources. Most of what I've seen - predominantly BBC, but also quotes from NHS and Dept of Health - seem to stress that many people will hardly notice they've got it, about half will be "ill" of which a few will be very ill, a few of them will need hospital treatment, a few of them will need ICU, a few of them will die.

It's still big numbers when you look at it across the population but if you are relatively healthy, as far as I have seen, you are unlikely to die.

“Stay at home – unless you fancy a nice trip out in the car for a walk”

Was that the government explanation or just the person from the BBC? Didn't feel the BBC had helped the situation on the tea time Q&A. I felt like banging my head on the table. It did seem like they backtracked slightly with a other people could also have had the same idea. Atleast it's cold this weekend.

In OAP world - following up yesterdays plan. Reasonably successful - early morning walk, observed someone else from a safe distance whilst out and about, worked, got the work thing collected, did the shop thing, got home stayed in. Didn't socially distance any of the neighbours.

Total transformation on the roads - farmers, delivery vans and a hand full of random roadies dispersed along the route. Supermarket had maybe 30 people in - marked standing waiting zones / person at the door cleaning baskets prior to use. Not really any noise or chatter in the supermarket.

Maybe if you'd not worked ,as per government advice and instead gone for your essential shopping during the day you would have found what you needed.Did my mum's shopping today, plenty of stuff available and the supermarket had the fewest customers I have ever seen there.

I am quite scared to be honest, I dont want to die.

Everybody dies.
Chances of dying from this virus are very slim for the vast majority.Be sensible and you should have a longer life. Best of luck with the business.

I'm not that fussed tbh, I've had a good run, considering.

I'm desperate to get back to work - Monday hopefully.

I work in one of the safest places in Britain.
If all staff are sensible then we should be able to make a difference.

Not sure if this has been posted but it's encouraging to see on the ft graph that the death rate curve in the U.K. is slowing down. Might just be a blip but hopefully with these new measures thing will not get as bad as Italy.

Try not to be. If you have no underlying medical issues, there is much less reason to be concerned. If you do, isolate yourself and others will help. Othe people are surprising. They are also hugely under-reported.

With regards to paying the rent, I believe that like any very serious blockage to a complex system, things will improve. The government is the lender of last resort and is putting the economy into hibernation. It's not being crashed - but it will take time to settle. They will not have people being thrown onto the streets, but it will need time.

No battle plan survives the first encounter with the enemy.

Now back to Radio 3... seriously try it. Great for the mood.

How’s that work then as I didn’t get anything to eat until 9 hours into my 12 hour shift, should I have skipped that quick 15 minutes to go shopping. I know when I was planning to have my break and ended up consoling a member of staff for an hour who was heartbroken as they were having to leave their family for 2 weeks to live in isolation. I should have told them **** you pal I need bog roll.

Just listening to inside health on radio4 and they are talking about the death rate in Italy. I was aware that they had an aged population but not that their smoking rates are double the UK’s and that of all deaths in Europe attributed to anti biotic resistance a third are in Italy! All of which means they really are up against it. Awful for them but maybe some hope that it won’t be as bad across the rest of Europe.
