big spike in cases in France yesterday – what’s going on ?
It looks as though France (and Spain) had a very low capacity for testing according to this article a few days ago, EUobserver article on testing, that appears to have increased slightly now so could account for spike in cases. They both also have huge numbers in intensive care so guessing the system is heavily strained right now.
Just been to my local Asda, was all very civilized with a one in one out policy, people queuing 2ms apart with local hospital/fire/police workers being allowed straight in. Also one person at a time on the belts

No permissions required either i.e. it doesn't track you in the location sense unlike apps in some more authoritarian countries, just sex/height/weight/age and the symptoms you report. Postcode will take just first three digits too.
I’ve had the ‘extremely vulnerable’ text. I’ve got moderate asthma, pretty well controlled, so presumably they are looking at what dosage of steroids people are on and going from that (mine is pretty high).

Serious question:
My 80 yr old mother is self isolating as is her (not live in) man friend.
He came down with symptoms of CV several days ago, which thankfully turned out to be a cough and cold. His self isolation time is up on Sunday. As I understand it, as he doesn't live with her, then he shouldn't be visiting. Is that correct?
Also is there a way that you can pay for a CV test to make sure you're clear before you go and live with someone? She says she can't live with out him and I'm worried.

the playground in our nearby park has plenty of parents and kids.
Much to my surprise, our village playground is empty. Possibly as the Neighbourhood Watch were keeping a live running total of the number of kids hanging round there at the weekend via the village Spotted page 🤣
Quite a few families with little ones out walking and pedalling. Hopefully enjoying some time together that they weren't expecting to get.

Sounds like a few people at our place were furloughed today. I was sent to WFH until further notice (after questioning previously and turning up this morning). Hopefully it works out for all, and in a few months those people are back in like nothing happened.
Going into work today (I'm a nurse), there was Sunday level traffic on my local roads and motorway which made me curious as to how the government intend to police the whole not going out business?
For example how would they know if you were driving to "essential work" or not short of road blocks or check points?
Our corner of the government was sent home this morning, whether you can WFH or not, but we are apparently on call to help out HMRC when they need us 🤞
I has to go out and get my brown Asthma steroids as I ran out last week. I was shocked at the number of people about. Then, whilst standing in a queue at the chemist 2 metres apart - it was one in, one out at the chemist - a young couple stood right behind me, then as I stepped back and ask them to distance themselves started arguing "what YOUR problem?"
So many people just bumbling about as if nothing was going on, FFS. This will promote enforced lockdown and/or deaths.

Think you've just answered your own question there! Here (Madrid) they've been stopping people and given that most people aren't anything like as good at lying as they think they are it hasn't been too hard to work out who's taking the piss and who has a genuine reason for being out.
My wife has just lost her job, though not totally unexpected as she only started last week. Was in the office all last week and was told to wfh yesterday. Though not fully trained up yet, she was doing work, rather than sitting on her hands! I guess she didn’t qualify for the 80% scheme?

Mrs SR is just in and popped into a small bakers on her way home. They're thinking of closing as no one is coming to the shop. Last week: no bread to be had. This week: bakers have no customers.
I live by myself and am getting furloughed from my work from home job (until my contract finishes in a couple of months then I'm oot). My girlfriend lives in a different town.
Been like that for a while, and even pre-lockdown I felt like I wasn't getting enough human interaction - and that's when I could visit people and go out for dinner or to gigs etc. I really looked forward to my once a week PT sessions too, and was getting to know folk to speak to at the gym, and my band was picking up and doing regular practices.
I knew the lockdown was coming, but figured on it being on a couple of weeks.
The reality of this is starting to sink in a bit. I am going to get very lonely! I see myself taking a lot of long walks. It's like a weird kind of solitary confinement.

I worry about the US. They're openly talking about sacrificing the elderly to prop up the economy. How long before there are riots on the streets? Those pictures of them all queueing to buy guns might not have been so crazy after all.

Make some plans. No matter if they are a bit woolly.
Short term stuff you can get done without any pre-faff, bike maintenance, read some books you always wanted to but never got round to.
This might lead you into a good mindset and allow you to think about the things you are going to do when this is over.

Well, I only work(ed) part time anyway, and had all the little jobs done as well as doing loads of reading, brewing, riding, playing guitar etc
I wrote a lock down list of things to do - stuff I'd been putting off, but I'll be done in a week or so.
Having things to do/mindset isn't the issue I already had that to deal with my semi-isolated life, it's the not interacting with people that's going to push the balance too far to one side. My GF and I have had a semi-long distance relationship for a few years now and frankly, I'd already had my fill of WhatsApp video calls <- they're not a good substitute.
To be fair, I'd already planned on getting a new job where I got some more interaction with people, so maybe that'll work out.... Might look at the food distribution volunteering stuff that's going around.

Sirdupla 250mg x 4 daily
Tiotropium Bromide 2.5mg 2 puffs daily
Salbutamol when required (not often).
No regular oral steroids or nebulised meds. Did have one course of steroids/antibiotics about this time last year.
EDIT: So I qualify for the high dose of Sirdupla + Tiotropium, according to the Asthma UK link published earlier.
Germany has a higher average age than the U.K. I think.
Health care availability is another question, as is effectiveness of containment.
Any of the data trackers like to guess the actual number of infected people in the U.K.?

super wooly assumption, confirmed cases represent around 1-2% of actuals.
gives the mega wide angled guess of around 750k
(projecting deaths back to point in time two weeks ago, multiply by 100, then apply the same growth as the confirmed cases, has seen that guess within a reasonable margin)

My guess would be in the millions based on how contagious it is and 50% of people being asymptomatic with a lot of the other 50% having mild symptoms. I know a lot of people who have had it (and I would put money on one being myself). None tested but a few in hospital but as in the pneumonia stage the virus has been dealt with by the body and no longer tests positive.
Not helped by the doctor of one family who all had fever and dry cough were told it was probably just a cold and to carry on as normal.

I haven't shopped for a couple of weeks so after seeing all the news about the chaos in supermarkets I surprised when I went to Morrisons at lunchtime to find only a handful of cars in the car park and only 1 or 2 people mulling in each aisle. There still wasn't any tinned, frozen or dried stuff though.
I was on the way back from collecting my workstation from the office 70mile round drive, very few cars, still plenty of delivery vehicles and trade vans. Saw a few teenagers hanging about together but other than that everyone appears to be getting the message.
The forthcoming economic armaggedon caused by this is the perfect opportunity for a concerted and coordinated effort from all countries to raid off-shore tax havens and use the trillions squirreled away to drag the whole world back from the brink.
