Hi team

I'm moving down south with work; the office is in Egham. Anyone got any recommendations of where's good to live around there? I'm 30 and single, looking for a house share to start with. It needs to be commutable into the office (by slicked up mtb) in 30min - 1hr (less than that it's not worth getting the bike out, more and I'll be knackered!). Looking at the map I'm thinking anywhere from Windsor in the west to Hampton Court in the East. I.e. I really need to narrow it down a little!

Cheers

RSD

Windsor, Sunningdale or even Chobham would provide you with a nice commute (going via Windsor Park) - but not sure whether I would want to live in any of them as a single bloke. Nice places but family orientated. Windsor has good rail links to town.

I live in Kingston a couple of miles further down the river from Hampton Court where a lot more is going on but that would be right on the upper limit of 1hr assuming you did the most obvious commute.

In my mind Hampton Court is neither one thing or another, wonderful place to visit etc, but nothing much there if you were to actually live there.

Have you considered Walton-on-Thames or even Weybridge? Still quite family orientated, but huge mix of housing stock, from the relatively cheap stuff to the private estates of the celebs etc.

I live in Staines. It's alright. Much the same as any other commuter town on the river.
Obviously, very commutable to Egham (you could walk it if you wanted) and if you're in the mood you can string together a long off-road ride taking in a loop of Swinley at the far end.

I'm in Walton, work on the edge of Egham - about 30-40 mins to Egham depending on traffic lights/bike, Molesey's probably a little more. Tho' if you're on the Hampton side of the Thames, you can probably get there in about 30 mins. Weybridge is a bit closer than Walton but doesn't reduce the journey time much 'cos it's just a different route more to the west.

Surbiton's a good spot - probably 50-55 mins out through the A308 (I reckon on Egham>gym in Thames Ditton in about 40-45 mins)

Thames Ditton's worth considering - likewise Claygate (55 mins?)

Trains through Weybridge/Surbiton/Walton are pretty quick 20/30 mins to London or better (Surbiton gets more services), those through Hampton Court or Claygate (different lines - as is Hampton) are somewhat slower (tho' from Claygate there's also a slowish but direct route to Guildford, you can go direct there from Surbiton too but frome Walton/Weybridge it's chance at Woking)

Surbiton also has the advantage of being just inside zone 6 if you want to go into London much, and Kingston's nearby - another station or two down the line adds about 3 quid of so the the cost of an evening travelcard. Last train to Surbiton (likewise Kingston) is about 1am, and it's at the end of a night service route from Trafalgar.

Avoid north towards Feltham. Woking's very good re connections but some bits of the centre are a bit pikey in the evening.

BTW - you *can* get a train from Surbiton/Walton to Egham if needsbe - it's a few stops down the line to Weybridge, then pick up a kinda shuttle service from there though Chertsey towards Egham (winds up in London but it's a very slow way of getting there).

You could look out towards Bracknell, you could live right near Swinley Forest for good mtb riding. A bit commutersville / suburbia, but I'm sure there are younger areas... Dead easy (8 mileish) ride to Egham.

Oh and lots of local riders too, nice people, (at least the ones I've met have been), good local mtb races etc.

What's wrong with Egham, you could then just walk to work?

I spent a couple of years living in Hampton, fine but boring. Feltham/Bedfont borders were better though.

Hmmm,

It partly depends on your budget and also what you want/intend to do when not working. Windsor has a couple of decent pubs and plenty of placed to eat out but it's probably more expensive.

Staines and Ashford are OK although they don't have quite the same kudos as Windsor or Ascot and the commute won't be very insteresting but they're on the rail line into London in one direction and towards Bracknell/Swinley in the other direction. You didn't mention if you have a car so I'm not sure how important train access is.

It's not that cheap to live anywhere round here and I'm not sure where the best places are to look for for house-shares other then Loot or the local papers.
