I would suggest Don Pasquale as a great independent Italian in the city centre. Either as a restaurant upstairs or a less formal Pizzeria downstairs.

I asked a similar question - but lower spec.
Ended up at D'Arry's. Our party was well looked after and the food hit the spot.

Had a good meal recently in Varsity. We ate very well and it was less than £60 a head

Also had a nice meal in Bedouin for something more laid back. The mint tea was lovely! Seem to recall I was pleasantly surprised by the bill too.

Cambridge is improving for places to ear out. SmokeWorks or Mill Works worth a look. Cambridge Brew House? Pint Shop a good call as well. Friend runs Novi on Regent Street which is also worth looking at. Or head to Thirsty (my local) and do whichever food van is parked outside that evening. If you want formal Allimentum is meant to be good but might be pushing it price wise. Six at the Varsity worth looking at as well - good views and food. Midsomer House is out of your price range and up its own arse so no great loss for you.

Oh and Steak and Honour have just opened a restaurant - built up a loyal following with their food van, but doesn't appeal to me being veggie n'all.

Either the pint shop or the old bicycle shop on regent street which is in an old bicycle shop. They laced me up a mavic 717 on LX hubs years ago

La maison du steak not been but my Cambridge based colleagues seem to rate it (or it's near the office and comes in under our expense claim limit).

Still got some serviceable V8s from Howes, circa 2000.
Shame the old fella wanted to give it up, but was a pleasure to serve him in my old gaff. 🙂

Yet to eat there but had an exceptionally well kept *pint of Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker in there recently.

*It was 8-10. Only popped in so the missus could use the loo, but the beer was so good we stayed all night. Menu did look tempting.

Clarendon chips are the best I've had, plus they'll let you eat at the bar as its small.

Let us know where you ended up. Chop House would be my selection from that set. But I also like many other places, Steak &Honour make epic burgers, Brew house is good if you don't mind half assed service. Smokeworks is good, Butch Annie's is good, there's a posh Indian on Maids Causeway. Plenty of decent pubs. As a city we are not short of good food.

If you love sea food then must check out The Sea Tree (Unit 13-14, The Broadway, Mill Rd, Cambridge). My rating 4/5, price is well budgeted.

I moved here (from London) two years ago and I'm constantly impressed by the food.

A few other options that haven't been mentioned: Japas isn't bad for Sushi, and I really enjoyed Cau for Argentinian. Also, if you want Italian La Margherita on Bridge street is excellent (would certainly be my choice over La Mimosa which is close by), or Tradizioni on Mill Road.
