for a 6-month work assignment?

It's for my brother-in-law. He doesn't speak German (though his company don't seem to think this will be a problem).

Anyone got any experience?

Last time i was there it was full of drunken hooligans and I must admit to feeling a bit threatened. Luckily the world cup is in South Africa next time.

The city itself is quite nice and there's plenty of resturaunts & bars. I've worked in & visited a few German cities and it is quite a good environment to be in. Language shouldn't be a problem.

German

Language won't be too much of an issue provided that work is OK with it. Socailly it will be hard work if he goes there on his own, I think there is little interaction between work and social lives and watching German TV will get boring...

I'd still go for it becuase I like Germany 🙂

I spent a summer there as a student. I found it pretty quiet. As Oddjob says, everyone seeemd to keep their work and social lives separate so I was short of drinking patners...

it's nice down there, a bit more German than Cologne, but friendlier than Munich, he'll enjoy it. The language might be a problem in work, i was working for Merc and all the meeting were in German, you could ask any questions in English, but you'd get the answer in German.

I spent a total of 3 or 4 weeks in Stuttgart & quite liked it. I'd agree about the socialising side of things - might be a bit tricky to find people willing to go for a beer with, although he may get lucky & find some Bavarians there to liven things up!

The city is nice, with a decent public transport system & plenty to do. Wouldn't be my first choice of German cities to go to, but for a 6 month work assignment it should be OK.

I spent about 9 months going there on an almost weekly basis for work last year/early this year.

Stuttgart is a nice place, I found the people to be really friendly, the beer good, and the city nice. It is hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and not too far away from the foothills of the alps for weekend trips. It isn't a big city, and is surrounded by hills, which makes it feel more like a big town than a city. The public transport system is excellent too, and I have never felt threatened using it late at night.

You can get by without knowing much/any German, my experience of working in the car industry in Stuttgart is you can ask questions in English, and get answers in English! 🙂

Stuttgart is like most cities, it's what you make of it and who you do it with. The mountain bike riding in and around Stuttgart is excellent, (The Schönbuch Forest is right next to there, (several hundred kilometers of trails). The Schwäbische Alb is close, and is also a good place for skiing/boarding in winter, plus, dare I say, the Alps are not very far away. There are several Bike Parks within an hour or twos drive. If you want to go out with English speakers, Patch barracks is also there with American mountainbikers. There are loads of good bike shops in the city as well. If you need or want any help, addresses or telephone numbers of MTB'rs or wot not, I still live in the area and can give you any information. E-mail in profile.

Thanks for all your replies. It looks like he doesn't have much choice in the matter and will be going there in a few weeks.

coolfurcats, I'll drop you an e-mail - thanks a lot.

If anyone has any recommendations for areas to live/avoid or language schools/German classes that would be great.

and is there any rock-climbing around there?
