We will be in touch
Hi,
I want to make some videos for youtube - what's the simplest, freeware app for doing that?
Microsoft Movie Maker
You will need to download oit on windows 7 though.
Yeah, I don't have W7 though.
If you have XP and it is up to date (beyond Service Pack 2, which it will be if you have the automatic updates on) then the REALLY GOOD NEWS is that you already have Movie Maker.
Seek on your computer and ye shall find.
Sweet, huh?
Ah, sweet. Cheers.
Anyone got any advice for someone making the next step up? My digi camera records in AVCHD which XP WMM can't handle, so short of converting it to avi and hammering the quality, it seems like it's time to upgrade. I'm thinking Pinnacle Studio or Corel Digital Studio seem like the leading choices but tbh I'm not that well informed...
I quite like Adobe Premiere. Not that cheap (and not too pricey), but for the "next step up" it'll be great.

About 16 months ago I had the same problem when I was given someone's HD camera to shoot random stuff at a family wedding. The first thing I did was convert (using a mahoosive work PC) the HD stuff to avi so I could edit it in WMM. The only stuff that would work (well) with the HD was paid for software and I didn't need the expense.
Things could have changed but if you really want to work with HD you'll need a fast PC and more than likely some paid for software but as I said, these were my conclusions a while back.
As another correspondent says WMM is on XP but can be tricky to find.
Yeah, I've converted the vids I've done so far to avi but it's just such a waste, half the reason I got the camera was for the better quality video but after conversion it's worse than my old Ixus was, I naively assumed that either it'd be a usable format or the camera would come with some software that works, ah well. My PC'll handle it, it's needlessly and wastefully powerful 😉
Still, I like video work and I do run my cameras most of the time so it's not such an unreasonable amount to spend for a good tool. I'll add Premiere Elements to the list, cheers!
Just be careful which version of Elements you look at cos there's some cheaper ones floating around that don't like living in a 64bit world = ow-ow-in-the-bum-bum.
Me? I'm still using Premiere 6.5 and it's great 8)
