I think the best way to see Hull is in your rear view mirror.

Having said that, there are some nice towns around there. Beverley is a nice place to visit.

The turning back on to the M62

Who gets married in Hull? Is it a psychological thing? "We got married in Hull so it couldn't get any worse from there"

If you are under 16: Get pregnant under 16.
Under 21: Do smack under the age of 21

Does Hull still hold these two records for the highest rate of teen pregnancies and young heroin use?

Firstly: Ignore those guys. Hull is ace.

Secondly: Evening entertainment or day? Kids or no? As mentioned The Deep is worth a look, and there's plenty of museums in the old town. I quite like the Street Life Museum, the William Wilberforce slavery museum is good too. There's an open exhibition on at the Ferens gallery which is usually worth a look and there are a few smaller galleries dotted around too.

If you're eating out, I'd head down Princes Avenue / Newland Avenue - same if you want a few beers. Tons of great restaurants - our favourites at the moment are Marrekech and The Persian on Princes Ave, or Gusto and the Ella Street Social on Newland Ave.

There's usually some music happening somewhere and there are a couple of theatres too. There's usually a comedy night on somewhere as well.

What to do in Hull?

http://www.visithullandeastyorkshire.com/hey/visit-hull.aspx

I imagine some Chinese tourists see the website think 'wow' and decide to stop off in Hull on a coach excursion.

Hull is (or at least was) a really misunderstood city. The place itself is a shithole of fairly large proportions but the people are really friendly, it has great nightlife and good cultural stuff.

piemonster - I was a member at Spiders. Interesting nights out. That interesting should probably be in quotes

The Deep is indeed good, with or without kids.

The Wolds to the west of Hull also offer some nice walking / riding options.

It's a horrible accent, granted. Quite glad I never picked it up fully to be honest.

I had good fish and chips in Hull once when I was there on business. My car was broken into whilst I ate and I can't remember the name of the chippy.

I used to work in Hull, socialise in Hull, live in Hull and my ex was from Hull so I dropped right into her social group.

I couldn't settle there at all. The only people who truly like Hull and can fit in IMO, are people from Hull.

I've lived all over btw and never had anywhere near the number of issues I had with Hull.

Spiders is/was ace though 🙂 As is chip spice

Cottingham/Beverley nice.

OP: Go to Spiders.

Chip spice and Spiders. Sums it up I guess 😉

For balance, I am from Hull, but I have a fair amount of friends who've settled there from all over the country (and indeed world) and love the place.

Spent 2 years as a student there in the early 90s. Spiders for me - my nights always ended with pink milk IIRC.

Some decent pubs about - I used to live by the Mainbrace.

Is the princes quay still OK? Someone told me it was slowly sinking....

Also, sadly, one of the most dangerous as it's a bloody fast bit of road.

I've lived all over btw and never had anywhere near the number of issues I had with Hull.

I think you might be right actually. I went back after a few years "down south" and got in a lot of "You're not from around here are you" sort of discussions

I have a fair amount of friends who've settled there from all over the country (and indeed world) and love the place.

From my own experiences, quite a few out of towners who went to uni in Hull seemed to settle OK.

My biggest mistake was living in town (Little High St), since Hull is slightly odd in that town just empties after 5pm (save for those lovely bars down near the station 🙂 ). I should have lived out in Beverley like everyone else!

I know I'm being critical, but it's not so much because I hated Hull, it's more that I always seem to hear "it's much better than you think!". I've lived in plenty of places that have bad reps (I'm also from one) which I genuinely believe don't deserve their reputation...but with Hull I sort of felt that the place just didn't convince me that much of its reputation was undeserved.

Oddly enough, I had a vaguely similar experience in Newcastle. I loved living there, but found it quite closed to outsiders in some ways, I always felt like a stranger, even though the locals are super friendly. I felt less of an outsider living in Italy! Maybe I just didn't notice it as much.

I wonder whether it's simply to do with the size of the place and the relatively low percentage of outsiders settling there which makes it feel that way?

The last people to visit Hull and do something constructive were the Luftwaffe.

Hateful place, hateful people (largely). If I was the Govt, I'd let the SNP stand there in the hope that someone else will take the place on.

Still stinks of fish I presume. Never been anywhere worse, except Grimsby, and even that has Cleethorpes seafront to lift it. Slightly.

OP, I've no experience of Hull, but as you're in the area, be sure to go over the Humber bridge.

Edit: If you take your bike, you could even cycle across.

A wedding in Hull, eh? Still, at least it'll be cheap with only one family there.

The Humber bridge is quite impressive. The trans-pennine trail starts in Hornsea, goes right through Hull and goes under the Humber bridge.

Beverly is quite nice. There's a good pie shop there.

I have no other things to say about Hull.

No. It's awful. Again, friendly people but a city that could absolutely be improved with a tactical nuclear weapon (I was born there and have family there still).

For a nice walk, I assume Little Switzerland next to the Humber Bridge is still open. I remember it as being very family friendly.

Spent 6 months working in Hull.

Even the cycling is crap as its all flat.

I'd make your excuses now and just avoid the wedding.

To be fair I think I'd have hated it if I lived in town, even now (it has changed a lot in the last few years). I rarely venture further than the Avenues, and if I do then its usually to the Fruit Market on the marina.

Pie! There's a a Pie in town, one on Newland Ave and I think one on Cottingham Road - has to be done. Amazing.

Humber Bridge Country Park (Little Switzerland) is a good shout too, plenty of ambling there especially if you have kids. Over the bridge there's a thing too. There are some birds I think.

I went to this one two weeks back. Cracking pies, sweet potato chips, not so great. Bit sooggy.

Yeah and the veg are overpriced. We tend to get pie and gravy and add our own veg at home. Om nom nom.
