Having just read the "some idiot in a completely unnecessary 4x4 ran over my bike" thread I was just wondering how we decide which cars are unnecessary?
I have an unnecessary Range Rover and an unnecessary Mercedes 7 seat V220 - I like the RR because it's comfy and nice to drive - I also like the large V8 engine 😀 - unnecessary I suppose as I don't need 4 wheel drive very often.
I like the Merc as well - it's also nice and comfy - sometimes I put stuff in it like kids or bikes but most of the time it only has 2 of us in it so also unnecessary.
I've also just not long got rid of a completely unnecessary 145mph Merc - obviously it went over 70mph so was unnecessary.
Also I'm the only driver in our house so having more than one car is unnecessary I suppose.
Should I get rid of them and get a smart car or a Focus?
What car should I get so I no longer get classed as an idiot who drives a "Chelsea tractor"?

I think they become unnecessary when you start threads just to tell folk that you have expensive cars.

But they're not expensive - I own and run both for less than it would cost to have a nearly new Audi or Skoda vRS.

55 is more of an aspiration in one of them.

I hope you carry copies of your vehicle excise duty discs whilst out on your bike, as you must own the road, paying for that pair of unnecessary vehicles 😉

I suspect most people mean ostentatious when they say unnecessary - course that's pretty subjective, so drive what you like

(don't feel too obliged to post about it though 😉 )

What you need is a shitty diesel Octavia and you will fit right in. People round here don't like others being able to afford nice cars.

I for one would love to have a V8 RR but alas I can only afford a focus and as that isn't a vag car I am a tit too.

You must conform to the way of thinking of the majority of STW'ers!

No 4x4, no Audi A6, no Orange bikes!

these are the rules that must be obeyed!

yep - sure do - of course I own the road - I also drive in the middle of narrow country roads and find the 4WD completely necessary for bumping up on the kerb right outside the kids school :wink

Seriously though - I have the RR because I like it - it has been off road and I like having 4WD in the winter - it runs LPG so doesn't kill off all the children in the 3rd world and actually works out fairly cheap to run - the Merc is due to having 4 kids and not wanting some crappy fold up seats in the boot - it also converts to a van for carrying bikes and kipping in.
I was attempting to make a point (had do so in a slightly sarcastic way due to bumping into the infamous GW last week :D) - the point being that on here anyones right to ride whatever bike the like is defended to the hilt (6" travel for tow paths) but why do some posters come over like Daily Mail journalists and embellish posts/stories with irrelevant info.

for the records - 4.6 V8 Range Rover, Ragley Piglet, Genesis Latitude and a beard 😆

You mean like overreact when someone makes an off-the-cuff comment such as "some idiot in a completely unnecessary 4x4 ran over my bike" ?

I don't know.......ask yourself 🙂

There is no such thing as unnecessary car.
It is the freedom to travel places ...

I think you should sell your 4X4. It seems to make you quite sensitive and prone to anxiety. Owning a 4X4 by all accounts is more of a problem to the owner than anyone else.

is that the same price as an Audi A3 and an Orange 5?

I happen to like bigger and comfier cars. At a time BMW with V8 was perfect car, then Audi Quattro V8 just changed my opinion that jealousy is in fact, complete unnecessary.

I don't know why people prefer small cars and fiercely defend their choice as superior. In fact, I used to have Golf it was good fun etc but I wouldn't rant at people who have superior cars.

More unnecessary cars people own, better 2nd hand car values to be had. It sounds like those who rant have some real issues.

I don't buy into green BS agenda though. Motoring is all about comfort and convenience, screw those cheap little shait boxes. Get real man's car, the one which can accommodate you with ladies and things.

I like Toyota 4 x 4 Landcruiser 4.2 litre that builds like a tank to protect me from zombies out there.

Drive whatever you like but drive carefully and responsibly.

Couldn't agree more - I really couldn't care less what people drive/ride - it's all down to personal choice. I like buying older quality cars as I do all my own maintenance and I know that generally they'll last longer ( when I find a car I really like I tend to keep it for a long time) - It's the same with bikes but the big kid in me always wants to adhere to the n+1 theory for ideal number of methods of transport.
I'm lucky in that I can bike to work and only do around 3/4000 miles a year so can run what I like - not like the old days when I did a high mileage and had to concern myself with MPG etc

Funny that; they don't like people having nice houses, either. FWIW, I've got a diesel Octavia, I wouldn't call it shitty, though it is becoming a shit brown because I haven't bothered to wash it since last year. I'd love a RR Sport, the new, super whizzy one the Stig took round Silverstone. I'd have a clear vinyl wrap on it, some hefty off-road tyres, and explore the remotest places these islands have to offer.
So there!

The jealousy argument is bit of a kop out I think. The fact is most RR's are a bit garish and a hefty portion of the most category are completely gaudy. All just my opinion though.

Drive what you want, as long as it comes from your pocket and not others, who is to say what is right or wrong. **** em, feed them rice.
(But, 4x4's are totally uncalled for unless you live in a field.... 😉 )

Drive whatever you like. But I suspect that what you consider to be "nice" others think is pointless and tacky, so do try not to get offended.

It's unnecessary but cause of the amount of fuel it pisses up the wall for no reason. Plenty of nice comfy cars that'll do 50+ mpg, no need at all to be driving around at 20mpg. You may not be doing many miles, but however many you do you're still wasting fuel in a a Range Rover. Unless you really have a use for a capable off road vehicle, and I don't just mean a muddy drive.

That's all there is to it. Fuel is finite, don't waste it.

I think there's such a thing as the ideal car, which obviously isn't the same for everyone. My denty mondeo with its protective crust of mud and its concealed nice spec and additional horses suits me very well, I can fill it with filthy bikes, park it in a ditch, and generally treat it poorly without feeling bad. 50+mpg and the ability to smoke the tyres at will is a good combo. A well used hammer. I wouldn't use a shiny one the same way. But if someone wants a shiny car, why not?

There will be an equation with mpg and fuel costs for a monetary answer however getting rid of both will be a start. After that just remember all the amazing things that oil can produce and then think about burning it.

I don't know. But it's not either/or is it? Having an economical car shoudln't make you drive more. If it does, your mileage is limited by your pocket, when it should be limited by your conscience.

Diesel engines & clever suspension have made so many huge cars drive like smaller, more agile cars. Just when a lot of clever science types say we should be cutting back on what we burn. I guess that's what gets to people like me.

Plus I see so many people who move to the country and think they need a 4x4. No one seems to warn them that they've actually built 'roads' between all the villages.

Who cares what anybody drives. Just be thankful we have the choice in this country. Some people have more disposable income than others and can afford a more expensive car. Doesn't make them any better or worse than the person who buys a banger. Same goes for bikes!!!

There's a common misconception on stw, that if you don't drive an expensive car, it's because you can't afford one.

No doubt I will get the calls of envy and bitterness but I personally don't like the new wave of big beefy 4X4's but it's just because I find them obscene in the same way I find giant supermarkets obscene. It's not a logical argument I'm sure but when I see a behemoth of a 4X4 lodged into a parking space I cringe. I'm afraid I can't help but sneer at the owners. I think they must be lacking something in their life.

Yeah exactly, rich people having been showing off to poor people for eons and we'll always find a way to do that. Fair enough.

But Brute Force Engineering? That's so 20th century.

I cringe in proxy embarrassment at the sight of a vehicle with "personal" numberplates.

Obviously the only logical explanation must be that I'm envious and bitter.

Although I like to pretend that I don't give a toss what other people are driving.

I drive a 4x4 to work, where I then jump in a 8x8 and move heavy things off road.

Contemplating buying a Audi just for the shop run.

I thought stw had established that pretty much anyone can get a VAG(cringe), bmw, faux 4x4 etc etc on HP

so people can drive what they want

although this thread is doing quite a good job of reinforcing the stereotype of people driving said cars being arrogant tossers who feel the need to compensate for some sort of inadequacy 😕

I imagine if people were always ragging on your *insert property here*, then anyone would get defensive after a while?

...and they do say the best form of defence, is offence.

All cars are completely unnecessary... ...to me. I think the point is that "unnecessary" is a subjective judgement. Just because I think they are it doesn't mean you have to as well.

Drive what you want, I say. Paint it pink and cover the seats with tigerskin* if you fancy - oils gonna get used up one way or another.

"The problem of the commons" and all that.

If you're going to burn fuel at a prodigous rate then seat covers should be tiger skin, rhino horn and ivory controls in the cabin are de rigeur too.
