Democracy only works if people are well informed
Democracy is a very fragile thing, even in countries that have a long established tradition there will be loud shouts to ignore it when it doesn't produce the "correct" result.
Politicians are economical with the facts.
If you have a functioning parliamentary democracy no matter how imperfect you should use it and not resort to plebiscite where by definition 50% of the decision makers are of below average intelligence. If you do insist on a referendum that will massively effect the entire population then the threshold for change should be at least 50 % of the electorate not just those who vote.
Beware of unintended consequences...
If governments don't engage with their people and simply dismiss half of them as thick and un-intelligent then eventually it will come back and bite you. This is not a British disease. It's rife through the US and Europe. Apparently if France were to have an EU referendum today then 68% of the population would likely vote out. Same root causes, its just us that have blinked first.
