The end of summer seems to have made an increase in time to finish, or at least upload, some more of the amazing things on this thread.
Yesterday's need to use some of the garden fruit glut lead to making a few jars of pickled pears ready for a winter of gluttony.

@joshvegas LOL, but its the perfect height for sitting on and donning boots and shoes - and it hides my tatty old work bag!
Stretching the definition of the thread a bit, more bodged than made... Dropped a pan lid onto its handle and the threaded bit shattered into many pieces. Coated the screw with PTFE spray and poured Araldite around it to recreate the tapped hole.

Slightly more on topic, since this half of the world is rapidly moving into summer I decided the empty log store next to the wood burner was looking pretty shabby and could do with tarting up for the next seven months or so...

Not great as firewood but looks pretty 👍
Always like a good fix. Didn't know about the PTFE vs Araldite trick - would have come in handy recently. This thread needs a resurrection.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this or not but I made this (sort of)
3.0 litre Jaguar sourced V6 into a 1997 MK1 MX5
It is a Rocketeer kit which, among other things, includes a replacement subframe and an adaptor plate for the MX5 gearbox
Originally the car was a basic 90BHP 1.6 (non-ABS, non-PS) now has circa 270 horses and makes a glorious noise.
All spanner work by me. I do have a build thread/blog if people are interested
That's very cool
Cool indeed - but going from a 90hp engine to 270 on the same gearbox - that's not going to last long surely? I assume the clutch was uprated at least!

The MX5 gearbox is a pretty bombproof and people do run 280-300 and beyond through them with turbo- and super- charged conversions (rear diff is likely to let go before the g/box but should be ok for the power I'm running...)
Clutch is brand new and is an uprated unit (it is part of the Rocketeer kit alongside a bespoke flywheel)
@Furious could you post a link to the Blog as would be interested to see more details.
Absolute YES top the Rocketeer. Awesome things. Going to spend the rest of my working week reading your blog.
Blog is ace. Really enjoying it!
That's bloody awesome. And practically brand-fascist-approved too since OK it's a Jag variant of a Ford motor but Mazda used one too.
A riser for my steering riser 🙂

Having bought a rocker plate for my Smart Trainer, I needed something to raise the front wheel up by the same amount. It needs some sticky rubber feet on it now though as it slips a bit on my trainer mat.
i ran this for many many hours on my cnc machine.
will eventually be filled with clear epoxy and make up part of a breakfast bar in someones kitchen.
Just made/did a couple of remixes for a band called the Helmholtz Resonators.
Bit of tweaking still to do, but quite happy with them.\
Doh!
@Rich_s What material did you use? I'm planning a similar sort of thing, a 'Gardenosaurus' but I'm struggling to find a suitable board to work with. It seems that whatever select water will ingress through the cut edges, cause swelling, freezing in the winter etc...
Any suggestions anyone?
How about a recycled plastic. I've used stokbord and ecohoarding board before. Totally outside proof. https://www.filcris.co.uk/category/planks-posts-and-sheets/recycled-plastic-sheet
@Ambrose that's 6mm ply. I made some witches a couple of weeks back out of 9mm and coated them in Ronseal One Coat Fence Life paint. Look back in the thread.
About 3-4 coats needed for a proper black. They were outside for a week and have not delaminated - I wasn't too careful with the paint either.
The reindeer is going to be getting white Cuprinol Garden Shades as it will be outside for longer. That stuff seems to form a plastic barrier over the wood and I'm hopeful it'll be better for the edges. I built a wonky shed a few years back and that paint is still going strong.
That plastic sheet is 4x the price of equivalent ply 😲
Plus delivery. Blimey. It's a good idea though - as long as it's recyclable through normal means too.
Those look brilliant @smehrlich.
They'll look mint with a resin infill.
What cnc machine do you run out of interest?

The hoarding is £100 a sheet. That's not much more than a decent marine ply and it'll last longer and not need any finishing.
The recycling aspect is an interesting one. It's made of recycled plastic that has probably already been recycled before and is getting to the point that it can't really be recycled anymore. We need to be using more materials like this if we don't want it to end up in landfill.
Hmm, not recent but similar to the reindeer.

Surely that's good. He'll buy another from you and it'll be a lot less work as you have all the files ready to go 🙂

that would make sense if id charged him a decent price in the first place!! i modelled it, then he changed it and so had to redo it and then in total it took about 4 hours to run.
i quoted him 80 quid and will wait for him to pay before telling him the next one wil be a bit heftier...

Yeah £80 seems good value.
Bookcases in Oak and paint.
Enjoyed making these. Been a while since I did any larger laminated panels such as in these quadrant doors, and got to practise painting with my £40 hvlp gun. Takes a bit of practise but pleased with the results.

Stunning
Nice Kayak but why the front edging strip on the verticals?
Are the short verticals between the shelves all seperate pieces slotted in and the strip covers their edges?
Nice, just wondering about the reason.
Also, not totally sure about the curved handle cut outs. The top seems a little angular whereas the bottom is a smooth curve.
Yeah, I know it is better than anything I could do right now but everyone is a critic, right?
🙂
Nice Kayak but why the front edging strip on the verticals?
The whole thing is made from 4 separate, tall units. Two outer quadrant sections and the two wider inner sections. Unified by a 50mm vertical cover strip which joins them and allows some cable routing.
More importantly, making it in 4 sections allows me to move it and work on it by myself. There's just me 😊
Maybe you can see better here.

Was going to ask how it was lit after seeing the top photos, tidy work.
Ah, now that is smart. In both senses of the word.
Thanks - I am as fascinated by the process and decisions made to get to the end result as the end result itself. Really helps me when I am trying to do stuff.
that is cracking. how did you then join the individual units together without seeing any fixings?
that is cracking. how did you then join the individual units together without seeing any fixings?
Thank you 🙏
One wider unit is added to the base, then angle-screwed/pocket hole screwed at its sides into the base on 3 sides, then the next unit added, same again to the base, and flat metal plates to the tops and backs linking them both together, routed in flush, and so on until finally the grey top goes on and is screwed to all the units.
The vertical strips at the front are biscuit jointed into each unit and tie them together up front.
Two steel brackets tie it to the wall behind. 💪

Sensational craftsmanship!

Yep.
I love seeing the stuff Kayak makes and then the description of the process or small details of construction - very inspiring.

I'd hate to think that were true. This thread is the best thread ever! I love seeing the process and results of folks creativity, no matter what it is.
Believe me, there's plenty of amazingly talented folks on this thread who hold skills I never could.
It's the only thread I can contribute to. I'm hopeless at the grown up ones.
Anyway, we always see our own faults. There's loads wrong with it that I won't point out 😂😉
Every time I look at Instagram I see countless things that make me feel like I can't do anything worthwhile...
Yeah, but Instagram isn't real though.
No. 😂
mission, could mr kayak make a kayak?
Could sure do with just 1% kayak's skill. He wouldn't miss it, but would be a significant improvement to my woodworking ability

LOL. Yes.
I recently made a free-standing shelf thing for our airing cupboard, having had the cylinder removed recently & a new boiler installed (moved from the kitchen to the airing cupboard).
I thought of this thread & started taking pics of what I was doing to put on here.
It was going to be a bit bodgy, but thought it would be relatively presentable. In reality it's a god-awful mess. The more of it I assembled, the worse the fit became & the more cak-handed my DIY became.
Now....it stands up & holds towels - so is a success of sorts, but I was tempted to smash it up & start again.
No Pics 🙂
To be fair, it isn’t a hobby for him, I do believe it’s his job!
Why do we never get particularly exciting pivot tables or lines of amusingly crafted code on this thread?

Yeah, that.
Last round-the-house thing was a workbench for the shed. Made from leftovers of OSB (from building the actual shed) from which I made some kitchen unit style cabinets, and the cheapest worktop B&Q could send me (which was indeed cheap and nasty).
Functionally it's great, I levelled up the worktop and took time about it. I even went as far as putting doors on the cabs.
Aesthetically, it is of course a complete disaster zone.
To be fair, it isn’t a hobby for him, I do believe it’s his job!
It's a hobby I turned into a job. I worked for others most of my career, then taught in a college for ten years. It's only since the second half of 2018 I've actually been able to design and make my own things in return for money, and so it's still new to me.
I'm shit at the business/books side of things, but making actual things is important for me and my erratic mental health.
Who cares what perceived 'level' creativity is at? All creativity, in this sea of negativity is great. Let's see it!
As I say, woodworking is what I find myself doing, but this thread is jammed with incredible stuff that's beyond my skill set.
Why do we never get particularly exciting pivot tables or lines of amusingly crafted code on this thread?
This...
This, I promised myself would be my last commission:

A study for a previous client

I made it harder than necessary with this continuous bookcase

And the way it goes round all four walls without a break but I (and the client) think it's turned out OK.
The handwheel on my mini lathe broke so I bought a large lump of aluminium and turned most of it into chips. This was my first use of a boring bar to bring the centre hole to size - went very well. I'm not quite so happy with the internal cone, done with the boring bar again. I had to use the compound at the extremes of its travel so it wasn't very rigid. If anyone's got any tips on how I could have done it better I'd appreciate them.

Your opinion matters 😍
I made a large pavement pizza on Saturday night after we had a Mexican party. Nothing to do with the copious amount of ETOH I consumed, must have been one of Mexican dishes people brought. Yeah.
Slept well though, and made bacon n eggs in the morning. Ah the joy of getting mullered at home and not having to uber / train / caj a lift home/ and refreshed enough to have a few bottles of Peroni while I watched UFC. Sunday nights rock!!!

I was going to show a beautifully crafted set of coasters but that didn't go quite to plan : https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/that-didnt-go-to-plan-glue-question/#post-12118309
Instead here is a painting I have just finished. Photo isn't great but it is the profile of a young lady inside the profile of an older lady who has been battered by what the world throws at her.

Okay, here's the last BASH script I made:

line=$(tac /var/log/pacman.log | grep -m 30 'pacman -Syu' | grep -v 'aurutils' -m1)
t1=$(date +%s -d "${line:1:10}")
t2=$(date +%s)
days=$(((t2 - t1) / 86400))
#case $days in
# 0 ) echo "System up to date!" ;;
# 1 ) echo "System last updated yesterday." ;;
# * ) echo "System last updated $days days ago." ;;
#esac
if [[ $days -gt 2 ]]; then
echo "System last updated $days days ago."

if [[ $days -ge $recommend ]]; then
echo " UPDATE RECOMMENDED "

Rather delighted with my peg basket...

I think I prefer the rustic prop to the peg basket.
It's worth the extra mileage. Nice table indeed.
Made a couple of pin boards for a friend to give as Christmas presents.
The eagle-eyed amongst you will no doubt notice that they are representative of a cats head.
I'm more of a dog guy myself. Cats are pure evil.

Put a new kitchen in this summer - not sure if the whole thing really counts as something I "made" as I designed and fitted it, but it was made in a factory in South Yorkshire, but this bit's certainly close enough and is probably my favourite bit...
I've always wanted an easy way to get vegetable peelings, etc. out the way while preparing food, so I put this drawer under the worktop where it sticks over the end of the peninsular. It's just a Gastronorm pan of the appropriate size, with some rails made from some oak offcuts from the kitchen joinery. I've recently added a handle, a bar for knocking out coffee from the portafilter, and sheet of stainless (from the bit of extractor chimney I didn't use) on top, hidden here, to stop the moisture damaging the worktop above.
Just made a little guide for my angle grinder to do a load of straight cuts on some 20mm porcelain tiles.

Due to my mate having a tree blown down got the opportunity to pretend I am McMoonter and stack some logs. Rather chuffed with my townie self!

kayak23 had best be careful - my mcmoonter mancrush is in danger of swapping its target! 😁
That right hand, top corner of the bench is just a lovely thing 😍
