They were smart, but they did get caught in a fairly dumb way.

Just as well it was a wired network, so they could follow a cable. Imagine if it had been wifi.

I bet this sort of stuff happens all the time to be honest. Especially these days when you have things like the Pi Zero W which is small enough to be [i]intimately[/i] hidden, has wifi, and can run off a battery.
