As we never really watch any of the Sky channels we pay for and the Sky HD box seems to need a reboot every week or so we've decided to just go with Freesat. However we have become dependent on the recording and live pause so whatever we get must do that.

Thanks

Humax, I got a reconditioned 500 Gb HDR from their website and it's great, way better than the Sagem the future Mrs rogg owns. Well made, quick and easy navigation, usb port to download recorded stuff to a pc, and a great picture.

Humax FoxSat-HDR here, got mine from Richer Sound. As good as Sky Plus.

I have a Humax Foxsat HDR and I really don't like it.

I find it crashes and locks up frequently, it is slow to download programme information and the menus are rubbish.

However, apart from Sky+ I don't there are many alternatives available.

I used to have Sky+ and although I hated paying for it I thought it was a better box and interface.

sounds like you got a duff one Winston, mine has been faultless (touch wood).

I would say the quality of the HD isn't quite as good as Sky Plus.

Thanks, i'll look at the humax, if it crashes less than my Sky box it'll still be an improvement.

Winston has a point. If you're used to using a sky+ then a humax is a bit clunky. But having switched I now find sky+ annoying with that god awful backup button.

Anyway, overall I'd say not as slick, but get a humax. Simply for support / updates / phonecall reasons (should you ever need it).

Another Humax HDR user here - had it for a few years and it's performed brilliantly. Slower in use than a sky+ box but nothing major.

Never had sky so can't compare but I've had a humax for 3 years now and its been faultless. Not hugely intuitive to use so if you are used to another system that means it'll take some getting used to but rock solid in terms of reliability.

Humax have recently launched a new box with iplayer/catchup tv etc built in. Will be getting one for Xmas as our old sky+ box has finally gone pop. (Cancelled the subscription 3 years ago)

I have a human box and echo what the others have said. It's slower than a sky box but once you get used to it its fine. Especially when you consider the savings

There's a brand new humax free sat box with the new free time ui. Check out satbuyer (seems to be good pricing and probably where I'll get mine from to replace my old foxsat box.)
