Depends on how you remove the stripes.

I've used this as an example when explaining the pitfalls of relying on averages.

They're grey.

A newspaper, nope.
A nun rolling down a hill, nope.
Sure I've heard this joke before.

I see black is actually right and that science has answered it, probably. Of course in the modern political world science doesn't actually matter. It was part of primary school philosophy homework.

Are the clouds in the sky, above the sky or below the sky?

I thought they were brown rather than black?

A zebra without stripes is just a small horse, right?

Ahem..... technically, neither black or white are colours.

If you used a bead blaster to remove the stripes, they'd be red. Like the Starchy and Hutch car, without the stripe

Actually... I wonder if you could mask off a stripe?

I think you're right. There's two different questions here:

1) Is zebra fur black with white stripes or white with black stripes?

2) If you shaved a zebra, what colour is its skin?

AFAIK, 1) is black with white stripes and 2) is brown. IANAzoölogist.

Sorry, I think it's the tiger's skin that's striped as well as it's fur. My bad. 😳

I have another one. How do you "remove its stripes"? I'd bet that you can't.

They're black, the same colour as polar bears.

Is that for the additive colour system...or subtractive??

It's actually blue and gold. Only looks black and white when your white balance is off.

Where does a Albino zebra factor into this?

As they seem to be neither black or white, a bit like Michael Jackson.

The real question is "What colour is a polar bear?"

They're equines, but not horses, and the dark stripes are very dark brown, not black.
And from a distance they're a sort of beige.

I had a zebra skin drum made for me as a kid when I lived in Africa. My memory is that the skin colour looked like cardboard.

MtPottatohead - see above. Black, like zebras and the sky when it's dark.

Nah. Lived out bush, so a real cardboard box would have been too expensive. 🙂
