We will be in touch
Only asking as I need to replace the Touran we had so just getting ideas.
Still got the 1.0 auto Micra though (yr2000) bloody great car solid and reliable and not once broken down or had a problem ! Its got 24000 miles on the clock and its 12 yrs old !
The replacement for the Touran needs to be an Estate auto (mrs likes them !) diesel would be better but not a deal breaker. £4500 to play with...
Didnt you tell us you hardly do any miles last time
Get a 1.6 petrol auto berlingo multispace .
Low miles and tottling about town is terrible for diesels !
Don look purely at mpg ! Look at total costs !
For record i have a 1.9d pug partner van i use daily on a good long run a 1.4 golf my mrs uses to sit in traffic in centre of town and a 2.5td land rover 90 for winter at my house
good advice yes mileage is about 8000 tops
A3 Quattro diesel - crap on fuel but fun for my commute
Passat diesel estate - great big comfortable bus, good on fuel.
BMW 320 M-Sport & a Punto Active (the Punto eats up a couple of bikes and is briliant in the winter)
S3 Quattro, fuel economy dreadful but such fun.
mk1 TT QS - 30-35mpg - but grinning from ear to ear.
MX5
Mk5 Golf GT Tdi (140)
Mk4 Golf Gti 1.8T (150)
Range Rover Sport, in Gold, and a Rover 75.
Freelander TD4 XS-E
Peugeot 307 1.6HDi (around 58-64mpg)
Renault Scenic 1.6 16v Fidji (around 35mpg)
Wish i had the funds to replace the Renault with something a bit more frugal for the wife.
S3 Quattro, fuel economy dreadful but such fun.
How dreadful is dreadful. Im getting 39mpg from the diesel Quattro sport.
Currently...
A Merc Estate
A VW T4 Transporter
A 911 SC
One of them is nicknamed 'The Slag'.
SB
Ford focus estate tdci ...thankfully ...as it usually resembles a skip with my kids...(would hate to spend a fortune on a car and have to get stressed out that it's being used as a skip)
Citroen berlingo 1.6hdi van (for work)
2005 Toyota Corolla hatchback 1.6 Automatic petrol.
30,256 miles bought it for £4,999 last year.
I am beginning to like the automatic gear.
🙂
535i auto - fast, bought cheaply s/h and pretty cheap to run but 25mpg
Freelander TD4 auto - versatile, bought new, a few problems (but the wife treats it pretty hard) and 30mpg (mostly towing/speed/heavily loaded)
Ducato 2.9 Horsebox - what can I say, and better mpg than my Beemer 🙂
1996 volvo v40. bought 2 years ago for £600. lovely car.
Just bought a Volkswagon autosleeper camper. 1994. 47000 genuine miles.
All mot's, recipets etc.
free lander 53 plate diesel hse 100k on the clock
Ford CMax 54 plate diesel TDCI 2.0 60k on the clock
VW Corrado Storm in green 98k on the clock,
CMAx and Corrado on 6 month rotation
Could do with swapping the freelander, for a Defender 90
how much did the autosleeper cost you ?
Golf V6 4motion (modded) - 20-27 mpg but great fun on twisty B roads
Er..... a '90 Corvette ZR1, a '69 Mustang 390 GT, a '72 Reliant Scimitar, A '74 Mk1 Granada Perana V8 coupe, a '96 diahatsu sportrak, a '71 Broadspeed Bullet Capri, a '91 Fiat Cinquecento and a couple of motorbikes and a recent BMW 535d for daily driving which strangely is about as soulless and boring as it's possible to be compared to my other stuff.
That's not been much help has it really ?
1996- Mazda Cappella 2.0 petrol 4WD Wagon(estate) 156000km. Cost me NZ$6,000 5 years ago when it had 89000km on it. I'm going to run it till it's next cambelt (200000km. Essentials in my mind for it's replacment Estate(wagon)for Big boot, at least 2000cc, 4WD for towing, NZ roads & unsealed roads/beaches, roof bars for my bike racks.
Citroen C3
Citroen C4
Peugeot Bipper
And to follow that little lot, a Toyota Prius and a Fiat Panda 100hp. The Prius does about 50mpg and the Panda about 25. A better argument for a Prius as a town car I have yet to encounter. Hopefully I'll be replacing it with a plug in version in August - no more company car tax, a virtually free commute and potential to make about 10p per work mile if I'm light footed.
I knew the oldboy who was selling the autosleeper so i got it for very little. I actually had to argue him up he was wanting so little.
Cooker had literally never been used. It's goin to be parked up in ,tress a fair few times this year.
"VW Corrado Storm in green 98k on the clock,"
Very, very nice!
Being middle class, middle management and middle aged; and being a member on STW, there's only one possible answer...
A6 2.0tdi - just got 44mpg average over a trip to Euro Disney doing a rather high average speed 😐
Landrover Discovery 3, great for bikes dog etc...
Wife has a Renault Grand scenic child lugger..
Old 1976 Landrover lightweight for fun..
and a Ducati Monster for the midlife crisis:-)
2CV
On that budget you could get a decent E class estate diesel.
2009 peugeot 207 1.4 hdi van - works
2009 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol hatch
1998 Land Rover Discovery 300tdi
I own a Bora but it's waiting on me ringing the scrap mand to come and collect it. I lease a Golf but that should have gone back last week, they said I can keep it for now until my new one arrives, that's being leased too.
Want. It's on Autotrader for £2650

'71 Broadspeed Bullet Capri
Car of the thread !
Honda S2000 and a Scirocco GT DSG
Ones quick and the other is quicker
Brought brand new vw scirocco last sept, and love it, not the best for putting bikes in but can get my dh bike in there with the wheels off, get about 50mpg, also got the wife a SRI vauxhall zafira which is great for carting the family around, petrol though so only 25mpg
Volvo V70 and an Austen Healey 3000 MkIII, the latter will be sold this year.
BMW 630i convertible (nice to drive but crap at everything)
Volvo XC70
Defender 90 XS
Currently rethinking our car "plans".
Love the look of the Renault Avantime but its totally silly,a 2dr MPV.
Looks really good in that colour and they are pretty well equipped.
A future classic potentially.
currently - none.
driving mrs_d's Citroen C4 since I got rid of my Saab 9-3 Sportwagon last may. It was a lovely car but the next service bill would have been over a grand, which I simply couldn't afford.
2001 Pug 306 HDi Estate - bike carrier
1991 Celica GT4 - weekend toy and spare if other cars need work.
Half an Audi A8 (Just the V8 engine, gearbox and driveshafts).
Hondas
An old Civic, and
An older Accord
Renault 4 and a Renault Twingo mk1
Great little cars!!
1932 Morris Major Six.
A 51 plate BMW 530i with 96k miles on the clock - nice car to drive, but a bit thirsty, thankfully I no longer have to commute to work in it and my annual mileage has dropped a lot as a result so I shall keep it for a while longer.
07 Ford Ranger for firewood and airport / train station commutes.
New Kia Soul (Mrs J's) for her to get to work in the winter and children ferrying.
The first time ever we have had 2 proper practical vehicles.
on of the classic old 'indestructible' diesel Merc estates - that's into the garage about once a month!
love it though...
07 civic type R
57 Renault Kango van
02 Boxster S
07 Suzuki SX4
One is the family car and, er, one isn't. Much fun
Don't own any vehicles at the moment... well, beyond an old Marin Rocky Ridge!
I do have use of a Mitsubishi Outlander though which is rather magnificent. Loads of space, very comfy, moderately quick and not as thirsty as may be thought.
Also have a rented motorbike since I can't afford to actually buy one anymore 🙁
As someone previous said, look at total cost and not just mpg.
Just bought the wife a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. 25% of the price of a similar age and spec Landy and should be magic for carting round bikes/dogs/kids. Only 30-ish mpg, but at our mileage it would take about 6 years to work out more expensive than the Land Rover.
The other car, getting delivered on Saturday, is a black Mazda RX7... >:D
1988 landrover Ninety (off roader)
MK6 Golf GTI edition 35
Landrovers broken most of the time and the golf is just fun! (crap on fuel tho)
"MK6 Golf GTI edition 35"
Ooooh! That's even better than the Corrado above! Had a couple of mk5 GTIs including an Ed30, fantastic cars! Very jealous boxxer7. My Ed went soon after the arrival of the nipper alas!
Only got one car, so has to do everything. Commuting, driving fun, carrying bikes, transporting dogs, camping (sometimes all 3 of those last things at once). Manages it all with panache. Just not cheap to run with a 250bhp 2l turbo powerplant, Brembo brakes and stupid tyres. MOT and service bill today came to £2k!
slainte ➡ rob
Couple of Fords:
09 plate Galaxy 2.0 TDCi Zetec 14,000 miles
53 plate Ka 1.3 petrol 46,000 miles
Ka for knocking around town, Galaxy for longer trips out of town (Cornwall a few times a year, France etc).
No plans to change either for a good few years.
Love the GTI's. I had a mark 5, tuned to 240hp, which was fun blasting away from R32's.
Currently got a mint mark 1 MX5 1.8iS, 03 Subaru Impreza, 04 Mondeo, 58 Nissan Quashqui thingy. Need to sell a few cars.
S65 and a RRS, both going back this year though, not sure what to get next. As middle age rapidly approaches I'm starting to look (even more of a) tool in a flash motor. I quite fancy a Prius wagon thing.
Ouch!
none, as im a cyclist... wtf would i want to own a car for!
Mk3 TDi golf estate.
77 Midget.
The former spending 90%+ of it's time with only 2 seats in "van" mode.
i currently have a 1991 VW Polo Rally Challenge car i'm rebuilding. I've owned it for 10yrs.
2002 Mondeo 1.8 petrol. 39mpg.
Carries bikes, washing machines etc with ease. Owned 6 years. 75k miles Still on on original clutch battery exhaust. Other than consumables had to replace a front spring, fuel pump and the radio.
At the point where it's worth more to me than I would get if I sold it so I'll keep it until it needs a big repair.
60 Civic Mugen M20 [mine]
08 Mini Cooper S [Mrs TLR] - Undergoing PX for a new S3 Sportback..
Currently an 07 RS4 Avant and an 08 Legacy GT wagon. Soon to be , errr, a VW California, the Legacy and a 911 GT3. Sorry.
Wifey tootles around in a 1.8 TDCI Focus and I destroy the planet in a 300tdi Discovery.
Picking up new company car next week though, '91 V8 'snatch' landy! Bought from a guy who'd got it from Withams but his wife did her nut so he had to sell it on, can't wait to give it a spin.
30+ mpg from a Jeep Cherokee? With the petrol engine? Either your wife is Miss Daisy or you're schmoking schomething, for schure.
2010 Lexus RX450H and a 1996 (or 5, I forget) Peugeot 406 Estate. I drive the estate.
Would like to get a 2009+ Golf. Or maybe a similar year Impreza for 4WD goodness. Unsure.
And, as a result I think of encroaching middle age, I really like the look of Porsche Cayennes. There may also be a bit of Panamera displacement in this...
Reference the post above, maybe he's talking US gallons?
1992 Mk3 Golf GTI 8 valve with a genuine 86,000 miles. Carries my bike with the rear seats down. Worth a lot more to me than most other people.
Shocking fuel consumption though, 25 mpg around town, 32 mpg on a run.

MX5
This is the winner for me.
Me: Citroen C1 with a (planned) mk2.5 MX5 (my third..)
Mini Cooper S, upgraded by Lohen to 210 bhp. Great car but almost entirely useless for carrying bikes, currently considering a roof rack.
Used to have a Renualtsport megane, just about the worst car I ever owned. Boring to drive and in 18 months and 20K miles I spent 6K on Tyres and Servicing.
The French should stick to diesels, they are good at them.
XC90 (for dragging bikes, boats, dogs, all family, etc)
Mk5 Golf GT Tdi 140 (for dragging kids to school & general running around)
Unless I win the lottery I can't think of anything I'd change.
A3 TDI for work and to carry the 5 to and from gnarly runs that I need full body armour for 😀
VX220 na for when its not so cold and wet!
Currently a Mondeo 54 plate - relatively fun to drive as far as fwd goes and fantastic for motorway driving.
59 plate Seat Altea XL - A good family car with a lot of room if you set it up properly, quite nippy too, mpg not as good as I thought it would be though.
Just bought the wife a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport
That the one with the auto box that self destructs and the chassis that unpeels if driven off road?
VW Corrado Storm in green 98k on the clock,
Me too, but in Mystic Blue. And a Mk2 GTi.
@b r
I hope the Freelander ain't towing a horsetrailer. That just pulls the transmission apart on them.
