Any reason why I shouldn't get the Nikon D3100?

If you like it, no.

I'd say don't get it.

There are other options that may be worth a look...

What draws you to it?

The wife was in the same situation as you, entry level, then probable upgrade in the future if she really takes to the photography.

Everything kept pointing us to the D3100, it's a good piece of kit. We ended up buying a "package" 2 lenses, bag, filters etc from Jessops.

No regrets at all, its a good camera for the price.

yep, it's a really good camera for the money, sure there are other options for similar money, but you wont regret getting one.

If I had that £400 and was looking for my first DSLR that would be my choice.

When I first started off it was with a Nikon D4O and I bought the book D40 for Dummies, it helped me start using functions onmy camera I would never had normally use.

they is one for the 3100
