We will be in touch
I'm looking to get a starter bike/tricycle for my 20 month old niece. Perhaps something that can be adapted a bit as she gets bigger and more proficient. Anyone got any recommendations?
Spesh Hotwalk
Mayby a PUKY.
My 4 year old is very competent on his bike now, and I put it down to having a balance bike to learn on.
I just took the cranks out of a 12" bike to make one, but any balance bike will achieve the same thing - you don't need to spend a fortune. It should have brakes, so they learn stopping as well as going!
I originally intended to put the cranks back on when he was ready, but he grew out of the bike first!
Rothan.
I've just got my twin girls strider balance bikes (clicky)
They are short for their age and the strider have really low saddles, but they can slowly move around on them, I think in 2 months we'll be ready to get out in the park:
So I should definitely be looking for a 'strider' bike, and preferably something with a brake. The Islabike Rothan seems to tick all the boxes but is a wee bit pricey.
Any idea how long littles tend to use these before moving on to something with pedals?
I would go for the Rothan. Firstly it is really low - much smaller inside leg measurements than any other strider bike I could find, and secondly they really hold their second hand value - expect £75 back after a year or two.
Another vote for the Rothan, mine's had his since his 2nd birthday, seat goes very low if needed. He's really got to grips with it now (four months of cautious practice) freewheeling with feet up down any available downhill.
They are pricey, but hold their value. When I was looking, 2nd hand ones were still £80 plus. Also, great service from Islabikes and they also have a part ex scheme as you go up the sizes.
Good point about trading upwards using the Islabikes part ex scheme. How much off the new bikes might you get?
