So far been looking at Lenovo or HP. What 3GB of ram but not sure about the rest. Mind-field of models out there so need some help!

Am I right in thinking lenovo are IBM in which case they have a strong business pedigree. Best question is ask yourself exactly what you use it for.

Its for my dad so basically its for email, MS office and the internet.

really anything will cope with that, perhaps get something cheap and strip it back to what he needs which should speed it up. Must be some deals out there on the high street

Lenovos are proper thinkpad tough though. Can spill your coffee on or stand on them if you feel the need, don't scuff easy, feel sturdy etc.
