Or go to Wordpress.com and they will host it for you.

Depends what you have in mind for the website.

Why Wordpress? Here we go, typical ST hammering home Wordpress* as the solution to all things web. Talk about build a rocket before you can walk. The OP has already said he has ZERO knowledge. Wordpress will do nothing but bamboozle the complete beginner.

Wordpress is a PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) that uses server based scripts perform automatic functions on a website.

Not entirely relevant when you have no under standing of web building.

If you are genially interested in building a website, then like any other language, French German etc, there are basics you need to know first.

Start with HTML then move to CSS. These are your building blocks and become the basis for EVERYTHING you will do in the world of the inter webs.

There are plenty of resources online (try Treehouse) that will get you started.

Once you have an understanding how this works then you can start to build on it with basic PHP and Javascript and maybe a little Sass but it's daunting and a big learning curve.

Begin buy playing about and building a static site – a few pages of basic HTML and CSS. Nothing wrong with this at all. At first you can build it on your local machine without even needing a server.

Online builders can help speed things up but it removes the element of trial and error. Knowing how a site is put together and works helps you design and code better in the log term.

For what it's worth. The tools I use for building/design is Sublime text and Sketch.

Hope this helps

*I'm a webdesigner/develper with nearly 20 years experience, most of that has been built on using Wordpress.

Why Wordpress?

He asked if he can start up a website with zero knowledge. Yes you can with Wordpress as you don't need to learn programming, if he wants to learn programming your advice is good.

I would also recommend Wordpress for the absolute beginner, I did the same as you, but don't use the proper wordpress install onto your machine version, it will be confusing, just use the version that is hosted by wordpress and you build it online via their website.

It has a fairly easy site which kind of acts as an interface between your input and html/css/all the crap elliott said. This explains some basics of how to set up a wordpress hosted site/blog
