I'm after a bit of advice. I'm currently a Java developer but I fancy getting into Web Design.

Could anyone suggest any courses that are industry worthy and recognized.

Thanks in advance.

Try Lynda.com for training.

Although HTML and CSS isn't that hard really, it the creative side that is tricky to master.

Quite often the roles of web 'designer' and web 'developer' are filled by different people.

You could monitor the various websites that share well designed websites - that helps to understand current trends and what industry leaders are doing for their clients.

I would investigate more about UX and responsive design.
I'm not sure there are specific courses it's more of a creative route around building up a portfolio (I think)

Have a look at SmashingMagazine and aListapart

Edit - so you'd probably be better on some sort of Graphic Design qualification as the html, css and javascript is easy (for a trained developer)

Probably looking at dev? Bootstrap and Grid, HTML5, CSS should be straightforward enough for a Java dev to pick, though of course it will take experience to know the tricks. Or go .Net / IIS if you prefer, there are good MS certification tracks if thats what you want to secure work for application server development.
The agencies I work with offer both but you get different devs according to the platform (generally, there's the odd clever clogs). I work mainly with LAMP stack as it's our standard corporate platform.
