ok you wise guys..any washer repair men on here for abit of advice please..
i have a Hotpoint Aquarious approx 2 years old and for the last few days the drum has been making a loud rumbling noise when spinning... the rest of the washer works apart from the loud rumbling noise.
looked on the tinternet and it sounds like the 'bearings' have gone , but my particular model says its a complete unit and you have to replace the whole drum thing...which sounds like 150 quid or more....
apart from the rumbling is it ok to still use until it dies completely as it still works for now..... if i get hotpoint out they will prob charge a huge call out fee....other than that i shall hunt a few neighbours out to see if they know a good washer repair man...

I'd be careful with it. I ignored the drum on my old machine rumbling. It led to a burning smell and leaking before there was enough play in the bearings that the belt kept on being thrown off. The machine's themselves aren't too bad to strip and repair, there isn't much too them. Some good guides on YouTube to repairing them too. Maybe see if you can get a replacement drum off eBay and have a go yourself? If you decide to go down this route order the drum now, as the bearings being on their way out could lead to wear on the spider, which would be another part to replace.

We had one of those, eventually bearing problem became terminal and was replaced by a new washing machine. British Gas wouldn't repair it as they could not get the bearing seperated from the drum.

Suggest once warranty on new machine expired consider one of the home support type packages from the likes of British Gas or others, when our Aquarius died we got a small sum of money (£70 IIRC) to go towards the new machine.

open door and get hold of metal drum, try and rock it up and down(*beware they are spring mounted) but the bearing is in the middle at the back so try and feel if it's rocking around that - ie clunk rather than spring movement.

Also if you take the back cover off, you might see running brown stain (I did on mine) where water has leaked through bearing.

I managed to do mine on an older hotpoint - 25 quid for bearings and seals.

*My initial feeling is that the whole drum thing is bolleax, however the twonks are making things more and more integrated (less recycleable and green - nice) ...............
Exactly what model is it ?

Whilst STW is the definitive source for all information, I find the UK white goods forums helpful for this sort of problem. They'll probably also be able to tell you whether you really need to replace the whole drum...

tried moving the drum back n forth ...it does move alittle ! theres no leakage at the back ive had a look... nothing obvious that has come loose either.. by hand when you swish the drum around with no clothes in it, it still rumbles..... its a hotpoint aquarious WF321 model.
hubby had a quick look..there doesnt seem to be much to these machines everything looks integregated..... the drum itself is approx 119 quid to replace for my washer... then someone to fit it at an extra cost....means prob a new washer..... ruddy things only about 2 and half year old.... i once had a hotpoint that lasted 15 years and in all that time it just need a rubber seal replacement.... they just dont make things last these days....

yeah, you're right, drum is one piece, what a crap design in a green world. Ditto - my last hotpoint did about 22 years with one set of bearings and a pump, only let it go when the dryer blower motor went and the cheapest spare was 120. If only they would standardise parts the world would be a better place - but less profit and sales and marketing ....

last para - possibly could do drum yourself if diy competetnt (digi photo everything before disassenbly)

To be honest at 2 years old I'd have a go under trades description/fitness for purpose, 2 years really isn't good enough, could try hotpoint.

hmmm today hubby spoke to a washer repair man and he said the hotpoint aquarious are basically shite ..lol and hes suprised its lasted 3 years (its 3 years old not 2...i found the receipt this morning).... everything is integrigated he said and unfortunately its cost over 100 quid for new drum etc and fitting on top of that and it takes 8 man hours to install the drum !!!!!!!!!!!!! lol ..... the actual washer still works apart from the rumbling and he said we could still use until it finally dies.... but basically this model is crap he said....
lol thumbs down for the hotpoint aquarious then.... oohhhhh...
its a begger when they only make things last for 12 months/2 /3 years......really... ghad....

Just a thought but check the wossnames inside are tight (the flaps that push the clothes round) - I had one washer where one came loose and sounded similar to a worn bearing. To fix, take off lid and tighten screws through outside of drum.

I replaced the bearings in an aquarious once, but never again! I actually had to go and buy a bigger hammer to get the old ones out! Its a hell of a lot of work for something which could (should) be quite simple.

Did anyone else read the subject and then in their heads sing "...live longer with Calgon"?

One other possibility is coins etc have found their way through the seal and are tumbling around between the metal drum and plastic casing. Ours (aquarius) started making a horrible screeching noise last week, the culprit was a bra underwire stuck through the holes in the drum.

what the hecks a miele ? sounds spanish ?
no there arent any coins, checked that or trapped wires.... it a definate rumble like thunder of the drum.. the waser dude this morning said you cant change the bearings on my washer, gave him the actual model number and everytings built in...... they do this so you will buy another washer in two years time.... crafty these days , manufacturers seems to like the word 'integrigated'.... 😥

Mine started doing that about 18 months ago. I just ran it at a low spin speed to see how long I could keep it running for. Finally seized up about 3 weeks back. I'd make sure you're in if it's on tho, just in case it catches fire 🙂

There are a few on ebay spares or repair.

Out of the three I just looked at, two appear to have unrelated faults so could be a donor. If you find one local to you...
