...Cupid.com!

Why the hell are these ads appearing all over STW!

Pics of young girls on your screen asking if you want to be your girlfriend ain't good when you're at work!!!

...and don't say its my browsing history, as like I say these are appearing on my work computer, not just my home one.

And, err... I wouldn't know why they're appearing at home either!

And the Premier option to reduce the number of adverts seems to do nothing at all

It's not based on your browsing history.
Just the fact that you are logged into STW, it assumes, probably correctly for much of the readership, that you have no girlfriend/wife.
😉

Isn't Singletrackworld on your screen when you're at work, not good for work?

ads are linked to your browsing history, tracked by cookies and all manner of things which happen behind what you see as a the plain webpage.

sneaky? aye.

Cougar - you seem fairly new on here, it might be worth you reading "Our policy on Ad Blocking" after clicking on "Terms and Conditions". It doesn't bother me, but your post might bother the mods.

Cougar, prepare to be modded...

However I agree with Muffin-Man. Our company takes a pretty tolerant attitude to people browsing the Internet but they take a pretty dim view of certain sites and dating sites are blocked and reported. Hence why I will be installing the Ad Blocker. I don't mind MTB related ads, I click through on them which I believe adds revenue to STW but I don't need cheap Russian brides thanks.

Hmmmph, I can think of lots of useful things I could do with a girlfriend, but I never see the ads.

Plus my missus seems reluctant to let me have one...

Also known as targeted sad lonely bastard marketing.

i keep getting these ads too. I certainly haven't been looking at dating sites or anything that's similar. I also get Crocs ads so I don't think its all to do with cookies. I believe that its targeted to the content in the thread though whatt you have in your cookies does play a part too

Example: Someone started a thread about Barak Obama and an ad with Barak Obama appeared.

(lets see if an ad with Obama appears again?!)

EDIT: Targeted ads are the ones that appear because of the page content
ads directed at you because of what you have browsed before are re-targeted ads

I've got an ad here for Lexus. On my phone, so only use it to look at this site, BBC news and fake book

If ads are based on your browsing history, this sites tracking is broken. I've got cupid.com asking me if I want a girlfriend and I'm a) straight b) female c) in a long term relationship and living with someone and d) my recent browsing history probably reflects just that, seeing as how I've been looking at a) houses to buy b) make up c) epic amounts of womens clothing sites and d) holidays for two.
And yeah, premium doesn't seem to be doing much tbh, but I just ignore them. Or giggle at them. Or snark about how bad her ear piercings look.

Those Flash ads don't bother ne at all.

....and to think people said flash not being available on the iPad was a bad thing!

Cupid.com have been added to our blocked list so they shouldn't appear anymore. Sorry about that. Google ads don;t just use contextual ad invocation (looking at keywords and responding with relevant ads). They also allow advertisers to directly target specific sites. I suspect this is what has happened here. They have now joined the list of golf websites that we have blocked, amongst others.

Cheers, ads now back to mountain biking ones. Far more comfy with that, thought less snarking ops.

If this sites ads are based on browser history (which would be odd given that the avderts are highly likely to be paid for by cycling companies like CRC) than I should be getting all porn ads going 😀

For the premier members...it seems to reduce the ads for me? I only have three, and two of those are CRC and one of those is a banner at the bottom of the page. You have to activate the reduced ads in your settings...

If she was any good at actually extracting gold then she would soon pay her way.
