I have Excel 2010 and Excel 2003 installed on my W7 computer.

I use almost invariably 2003, but kept 2010 installed just in case someone sends me a file of a later version.

When I open an *.xls file from explorer W& automatically launches 2010 to open it. I have tried changing the default program using the "Open with..." and then saving the selected program but it wont remember to use 2003 instead of 2010. Where else are default program settings held?

If you click the Start butotn (or whatever it's called in Win7) there's an option 'Default Programs' option on the RHS just below the Control Panel etc. Might be worth a go.

cheers pure, just tried that and same problem.

I tell it to associate xls with Excel 2003 and it still just calls it "Microsoft Excel" with no distinction as to version and then continues to open the file with 2010. Im thinking its a registry entry somewhere.

woohoo.

Found a solution online. You have to run detect and repair in 2003. Im assuming this re-writes a registry entry somewhere that sets 2003 files to launch in 2003 and leaves later versions untouched.

peace and calm is restored.

It is advised to install Office 2010 first, then 2003 second.

I had the same problem with '07 / '03 combination (Visio)

Also,

You can uninstall 2010 and install the 2010 filters into 2003, solving your original problem.
