What’s rhe pay differential between Wagner and russian MoD contract, will the core mercenaries from Wagner sign up or just drift off to africa via belarus to earn some proper money?
about twice the rate in wagner
The whole thing seems bonkers
will Wagner troops want to go into crappy Russian units?
will russian units want Wagner fighters, will they trust them ?
will russian or belarussian security service want to let Wagners control tanks and other potentially coup facilitating equipment?
You’d hope UK opposition parties are pushing at an open door here…

Less prison time I'd imagine.
I thought maybe one paid in rubles and one in dollars...
the whole failed "coup" was cooked up by the Whitehouse as a distraction from Hunter Biden 😀 well according to fox anyway
From the Guardian. That’s brilliant – I’m getting into catering… I mean, why even bother pretending you’re legitimate.
Thats what lawyers are for. To sue anyone who dares question your legitimacy.
Right up until the invasion he was pretending not to be in charge and suing the Bellingcat founder in the UK courts.

I guess thats the hope, the 'proper' boys disappear and the jail-clear-out cannon fodder gets foisted on the regular army.
This is interesting if true

I see it the other way - the murderers/rapists etc. sprung from jail take the 'you can go home as an option' which I presume probably doesn't mean going back to jail.
Guessing the original Wagner members might just join the other mercenary groups that are definitely not in Russia.
Listening to someone describe Wagner as "elite" today made me chuckle. Most dedicated milsim airsoft types are probably more competent that Russian conscripts, but "elite" is a stretch. I mean the last time they met a well-trained, competent force things got a little spicy for them.
I try not to hate media "experts" but by god they make it hard.
They ran into the americans in Syria didnt they?

Again, so much going on in the background. History will tell, but until then it's a real confusing and half-truth situation.
Qué?

Yeah, 500 (estimated) Wagner against a main force of YPG backed by 40 US SOF and support elements. Estimated 100 Wagner killed, 200 injured; one YPG bod with low level injury.
In UKR they've also not fared well against certain units either. The hope is the longer this goes on the higher the competence overall of the UKR forces can grow as they gain experience and have the benefit of high levels of support and training from allies.
Was that the engagement where the US asked the Russians if they had any assets in the area, the Russians answered no so the US greenlit airstrikes on them?

Yup, the US and RU deconflicted at a local level as the ground commanders didn't want to start WW3, Russian higher didn't tell Russian ground commander Wagner were operating in that area or supporting an attack on the YPG so when the US sought clarification and were assured no Russians were in the assault they malletted them with armour, artillery and air.
An opportunity for the US to try out all their toys and show the Russians what they were dealing with.
Mark Warner told NBC News Prigozhin is in Minsk, and He hasn’t been seen sinsk.
😁
It better be a bungalow hotel with no windows, no door handles, no tea or umbrella stands and no laundry facility to prevent polonium pants syndrome.
Or a gas supply, for that matter. Or a basement with stairs down to it. Or doors that can be locked from the outside.
Just thinking out loud, really.
@martinhutch - pointless posting a link to that NYT article, their stuff is always behind a paywall. I’m damned if I’m going to sign up to every news entity just for one particular article.

as above: summary of the article would be useful. I already subscribe to one heavyweight major news publisher (Daily Mash) and don’t need any more.
This is isn't behind a paywall.
It is for me.
And for me.
Same on my computer, but on my mobile it's fine. Bizarre.
This is less spicy as the NYT article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Khasham
For paywalled articles googling the headline usually finds a non-paywalled version
The Russian rebellion that wasn't has shown President Lukashenko to be a shrewd operator.
His own army needed significant Russian support in 2020 after another election result was denounced, but those Russian numbers and their equipment have decreased significantly since the invasion of Ukraine. The recent announcement of the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus is seen as a symbol of that Russian presence. Russia also had an invasion plan to assist Belarus, although that's no doubt on a back burner now
Belarus has an opposition in exile led by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya who has the ear of Belarussian opposition forces who are currently fighting in Ukraine to oust Russia, such as the Kalinouski Battalion and Pahonia Regiment.
President Lukashenko is very aware that the arrival in Belarus of these battle-hardened troops with western weapons will cause massive problems for his own untested army, assuming that Belarussian forces remain loyal to him. The opportunity to offer Wagner PMC a home was too much to resist
There's a breakdown of Wagner PMC's options here... https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-june-27-2023
Belarus could be an attractive proposition for them

Yesterdays US weapons aid to Ukraine is heavy on AA, anti-tank, mine and obstacle clearance https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/3440628/biden-administration-announces-additional-security-assistance-for-ukraine/

Looks like Ukraine are building their forces on the eastern bank of the Dnipro, can’t see this being much more than a spoiling action at this stage, unless they are able to get logistics and heavy armour across?

Missed this earlier in the year...
John McDonnell (the man who could have been Chancellor) makes a Left Wing case for supporting Ukraine...
https://labourhub.org.uk/2023/02/21/the-ukrainian-question-for-socialists/
For me, I have a history of opposing, speaking against and voting against illegal invasions of countries from Iraq to the sending of troops into Afghanistan and the bombing of Libya and Syria.
So, with such a consistent track record of opposing illegal wars launched by imperial powers, it is completely understandable why I have opposed and condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and why I have supported arming Ukrainians fighting the invasion of their country.
Andrew Murray (the man who could have been a no10 SpAd) disagrees, and is not shifted from his Tankie myopia by Russia's invasion at all...

Exactly. It takes some pretty extreme double-think to be able to condemn imperialism but not condemn Russia in this war.

Not that extreme if you're wedded to your communist utopia like Murray is. It's a short leap for him and others who believe the same.
McDonnell makes an excellent point and although I may disagree with him on some other perspectives unrelated to Ukraine I fully respect him and his voice on such matters as it can bring balance and put forward an alternative view or options and help moderate government overstep (in an ideal world).
It's going to be very funny if Russia loses Bakhmut
Putin is going to look even more stupid

Or vice versa. Or is that the case for 'Whataboutary'
EA have just announced a new Call of Duty episode to join the anthology...

When they make a movie of this, Vin Diesel is a shoe-in to play Prigozhin
So the incompetent & corrupt Shoigu & Gerasimov seem to be consolidating their power
Surovikin who was brutally effective & pragmatic (oversaw retreat from kherson) Has been arrested
Wagner disbanded...
Not a terrible result for Ukraine at all!
I dont think Wagner is disbanded, now or any time soon. They're needed in Syria, Africa etc. Which means Prigozhin is also probably safe for now at least. Were the Russian government to assassinate him, his forces in the other countries might stop supporting Russia to the extent they are, or we'd likely see more unrest in the ranks, not the same enthusiasm
But they've sent this volatile nutter to Belarus, with at least 25 thousand of his own troops, just as mobile nukes are arriving.
Not a good combination that.

They're mercenaries. They'll follow whoever has money.
