What’s the Russian version of Ride of the Valkyries?

1812 of course (and it has cannons for extra fizz).

A coup! How unexpected! Maybe prigozhin did make a deal with Ukraine after all. Even if this coup fails there's suddenly a lot of armed soldiers that are unloyal to Putin. What will happen to them if Prigozhin gets dead? They don't just disappear.

Crikey this is all very fast moving and unexpected with lots of misinformation coming out - but by 'eck it looks bad for Putin

Just remember tho that more folk are going to lose their lives here

Wagner group are mercenaries so they are doing this for self interests or because someone else is paying them more

lets hope there's a complete collapse of the command structure in Ukraine and Local commanders do the sensible thing and pull out.

Yep, dangerous times for Prigozhin right now. I wonder if Putin has any other people embedded who can get near him?

lets hope there’s a complete collapse of the command structure in Ukraine and Local commanders do the sensible thing and pull out.

It must be close to impossible to wage war when this is happening behind you.

What I love in the old bloke on the bike video is when he says “I’m not being rude”. It’s like half a dozen brutal, ruthless, battle hardened mercenaries are suddenly offended by his attitude. Snowflakes I tell ya!

Seems relatively cosy, all things considered:

And what, potentially get rewarded with a sledgehammer head massage for their efforts? They'll either take a side or just sit by.

I guess they also have personal loyalty to their commander and also see the truth of the situation in Ukraine and blame Putin / regular army for the deaths of their comrades

I'm sure that "truth" depends on whether they were pointed back to the front lines with no equipment or given a morale boosting session by Wagner at some point or not. I'm sure those that have will feel very differently to that that haven't.

I'm sure the Wagnerites would much rather be making their money fighting less well-equipped and trained combatants in other parts of the world.

I'd of thought if you are a Russian soldier in Ukraine right now by far the best option open to you is just put your white flag up and surrender. If you stay where you have no idea at all who is loyal to who and basically you are in a situation where effectively you are surrounded. There is no definite safe direction in which to move. You could just decide to go home but you've no idea who you'll meet on the way.

Yep - Ukrainians have proved too much so they’ve turned on the banker and his toy-town army! 🤣

guess I they also have personal loyalty to their commander

I would be surprised if that figures very high on their list of priorities.

Aren't the majority of Wagner fighters prisoners who have been promised a pardon? My understanding is that many having completed their stint and have now returned to a normal civilian life.

I can't see them having much personal loyalty.

My understanding is that the core group of Wagner fighters are ‘professional’ soldiers who have been brutalised and battle hardened by experience in Syria and Africa, as well as Ukraine. My understanding is that a significant portion of the 25,000 troops that Prigozhin claims to control would fall under this definition.

The convicts were brought in to quite literally be cannon fodder as Wagner pressed the siege of Bakhmut. Prigozhin has admitted to 25,000 Russians dying there (which means the real number is higher), but the vast majority of these were expendable convicts. The ‘real’ soldiers were behind, shooting those who tried to get the hell out and moving forward only once an exploitable breach had been made.

So I guess we can assume he’s got 25k-Ish real soldiers and the majority of Russian soldiers probably don’t want to get killed in what is essentially an argument between different factions of the elite. If the army does stand by, Putin is toast

Russia blowing up its own fuel depots to slow the advance of Russians is not something I thought we'd be seeing today.

President Putin is also reportedly speaking to the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev amid the mutiny. The Russian news agency Tass cites a Kremlin spokesman on the talks, Reuters says.

President Putin has also spoken to the President of Kazakhstan, according to Kazakh officials.

if I come and stay will you rat me out to the west ?

BBC news have live feeds of Moscow saying it's a normal day. all I'm seeing is Empty buses and empty streets with police cars going by.

Hardly normal for capital city.

Putin's statement is a rambling mess but might be lost in translation I guess.

Chechen leadership is backing Putin apparently moving pro Putin troops around Russia is going to leave a lot empty satellite states with no troops

Something extremely dangerous I fear. I know many will be getting excited but I'm not exactly sure I want to see what Putin will do when he reaches the Hitler-in-the-bunker moment. I see the Ukrainian foreign minister is getting very excited..

It’s all completely hatstand isn’t it! Footage emerging of trucks being blown up on the M4 highway that leads from Voronezh to Moscow.

Reports that Gerasimov was at army HQ in Rostov when Wagner barrelled in, but escaped and is now holed up in the city. No way of knowing if this is true.

Apparently Prigozhin has spent the last few months stockpiling weapons and ammo for this, despite all his protestations about lack of supply. Seems, it was deliberately timed for a Friday night as most military leadership would be even more hammered than normal.

Apparently the FSB and the border police were told not to let Wagner over the border. But if you’re a detachment of 100 or so guys at a border post and 25,000 heavily armed killers ask to be let through, what you gonna do 🤷‍♂️

Looks like the rocket and/or airforce attack on Wagner (not to mention a few other recent incidents) where pre-emptive strikes. Probably with the aim of getting Prigozhin.

However this plays out, it’s not a knee jerk reaction, it has been planned for some time..

Putin outsourced a big chunk of his military to warlords, because it bypassed some of the corruption endemic in the wider Russian military

Now the most powerful of these warlords: Yvgeney Prigohrzin (with the most effective units of the military) who have fought for months in Ukraine giving Russia it's only victory since the start of the war is furious  that Russian MOD ministers & generals (whom he despises) are taking control of his army away from him, so he's rebelling against them.

Also of note is that Wagner are Russia's force in Africa, controlling large areas of country propping up regimes from Syria to Sudan and control mineral wealth worth billions

Also of note that Wagner is stuffed full of criminals given early release to fight I Ukraine

Putin can't be sure if his own soldiers are sympathetic to Wagner either. So far his column of tanks and troops leaving g Ukraine have not been stopped by the troops they've met, but some fighting has happened and is likely to get worse

@kimbers

Thats an interesting bit of footage in so far as there is a video of Prigozhin talking with the Russian army commanders in Rostov and he’s berating them for (amongst other things) blowing up a bus and killing civilians. If so that footage would seem to be from the early stages of what is happening
