[Closed] Twitcherists - what was the bird I saw in my garden this morning

[#10222564]

Fat little thing, bit bigger than a blackbird (I know that as the blackbird kept trying to chase it off), eating a windfall apple on the lawn.

Sort of greyish colour, very slightly mottled chest, very distinctive light-coloured band around the neck. Our little book of garden birds and the RSPB bird ID site are coming up blank...

Nope, not Fieldfare. Whole head and body was the same colour, apart from the very feint chest markings and the neck band

Not a ring ouzel - looking at a pic they're too dark, and the neck ring was thin and all the way round, like a necklace.

Not a baby robin, cos if it was I'd have killed it.

Sounds like a mistle thrush to be honest, as vazaha suggests.

Mistle thrush - no neck band, too mottled on the chest

Redwing - no red on it at all.

Jay - no blue on it, no head markings

Collared Dove perhaps? mottling on the chest due to ruffled feathers (possibly immature bird)

I (and she) wondered about Collared Dove, as it was a pigeon-y kind of colour, but on the dove the collar is dark and on the back of the neck. This was a light ring all the way round, like a necklace.

I shall call the RSPCA!

Who will tell you to do one and suggest that you might try the RSPB instead.

Edit: No they won't.ย It's the other way round.ย My bad.

You should call him George.

This time of year - especially with a large hurricane in the Atlantic - maybe it's a blow in?

Try a proper twitcher site likeย  https://www.rarebirdalert.co.uk/RealData/dailysummary.asp and look what's knocking around.
