Did the Ladybower to Cutgate route today, last time I did it was 2013 according to Strava. I must say I was completely unimpressed with the trail, it is far rockier than I remember and a lot of it, for me anyway, is just unrideable, because of how rocky it is. The bog of doom is pretty much dry now but the rocks, nearly every stroke of the pedal involved striking a rock and my bike has suffered as a result. Rear mech, wheels, crank arms, all damaged. I know it’s a mountain bike and should be ridden but come on. I won’t be returning to Cutgate in a hurry, I know there are efforts to get some funds together to make it better but for me it’s now just a continuous rock fest and no fun at all. Show me the twisty, flowing, soft, wooded Singletrack any day. What are other people’s thoughts?

Trevor.

Rode it for the first time ever last month, liked it a lot, the top flat section isn't that good and needs a lot of work to get through it but the 2 descents are top draw, loved the long run out to the North, the drop back to Ladybower was good when it dropped but the long paved section was just a good chance for a rest.]Was all fine until the last bit of bog trapped my wheel and sent me OTB and punching myself in the ribs

Personal choice isn’t it. I love it, but give me steep tech every day of the week. I wouldn’t call it a rock fest though but I’ve not ridden it for a couple of years. I’m not so keen on flowy Singletrack, but it’s all enjoyable.

if you really want to walk the bike go try Dr’s gate off snake pass. I’ve never cleaned that and doubt I ever will!

Not feeling that Trev - I can't see how it's gotten rockier (unless you're posting in jest)? I mean that can happen with some man-made surfaces that get eroded, but where have the new rocks come from on Cut Gate?

Disagree, the climb from langsett is a great technical and fitness challenge and all doable. In fact the climb both ways are great. I've never made it up from bull Clough without dabbing tho.

Ride it on a regular basis. One of my favourite trails. Now its dry its a blast out and back via North America. Hope it stays the same and its not tamed like last time.

Via North America? Where is that one?

I didn’t expect everyone to agree, just my personal thoughts. Not for me I’m afraid, just wasn’t feeling it today. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t as rocky last time I rode it, a few years ago and I guess soil erosion could reveal more rocks over time? Pretty much all of the big rocks have pedal strike marks on them and I did see a few broken bits of bike on the floor, certainly looks like it takes its toll on bikes anyway.

I can see how it's not going to give you that feeling if you are not getting through it, but do you mean the flat top section or the descents?

Although saying that, there were a few sections that were fast and enjoyable, oh and I did have a OTB’s moment, into soft vegetation thankfully!

Turn right at the green post on the way back then left at the gate at the bottom and back up for the last blast

The rocks make it what it is. You might get on better with white peak trails if you prefer a different type of track.

It's a good couple of years since we were down there ..but it still ranks as one of my favourite trails in England .

I think it's 4 times in total now ( including a huge 50 mile circuit out of Glossop) ..and I've never known anything but dry & dusty..

Always been that rocky of the top. They have added some extra rocks about half way down the decent to North America to prevent trail erosion which aren’t much fun and has caused a widening of the trail as everyone walk / rides around them, but cut cate itself has always been one where you have to watch your pedals & great fun. Was up there last night and it’s a dust fest at the moment!

That's our intent. But if we don't make the money I suspect we won't get as much of a say in exactly how it's done

It is what it is, I hadn’t Been up last year went up a few weeks ago and plan a night ride from holmfirth in the next few weeks , I cleared the whole rocky section to then hit a big boulder I saw but my tired legs failed to move out the way of,so busy a nearly new SRAM derailleur an expensive ride ..

It’s certainly not a trail centre

Pretty much all of the big rocks have pedal strike marks on them

That's not the rocks' fault.

Hmmmm.

I think it might depend on your mood and group. I rode it years ago with Alex (rip) and some others from bikeradar, it was amazing, simply awesome.

Then I tried it one evening years later and it sucked. I had to push loads and in the end gave up and came home wondering about what the heck I had liked about it in the first place.

I think it's a bit like bouldering on the way up. You separate it into short sections in your mind and try to clean them. You push each other on and get immense satisfaction out of riding little bits.

But on your own you don't realise that the ups are actually quite hard and after a while you give up and push.

I have some sympathy with Trevor.

I love Cut Gate and try to ride it a couple of times a year but that's enough for me.

I was there last Sunday and rode it like someone who'd never seen a bike before but I'll go back in a few weeks and ride it like a god.

You’re riding the wrong trails in the wrong area fella.

That’s one less rider on the trail the next time I go to ride it, so yes, I approve totally.

Rode it a few weeks ago… best ride of the year so far… it was mountainbiking at its best.

Any chance you could share that route please? My partner has friends in Glossop so I might end up in a position to do a ride from there some day.

I suspect the one from Glossop is this one or a variation. Takes in a few of the best bits of the Peak including Jacobs and cut gate, but the last ~10-20k after cut gate back to Glossop is a bit shit. Locals might know of some better cheeky bits instead of that though 😃
