Interview on friday and looking for tips on tricky interview questions and appropriate answers.
I should be OK technically and dont have huge gaps between employment that need explaining, I was more thinking of questions like "what are your weaknesses" etc, "what would you do in this situation", and "where do you see yourself 5 years from now" type of stuff.
Anyone had any recent interview experience that they would like to share and the best way to tackle tricky questions?
Cheers
Just answer everything with "Depends."
Be honest - anything else comes back to haunt you one day...
The weaknesses question is not so bad - be honest about what your weaknesses are but then tell them about how you are tackling these and son on - shows you are capable of change etc etc..
Rachel
Obviously, my weakness must be my feeble grasp on the English language...
"what are your weaknesses"
I'm a perfectionist
"what would you do in this situation"
???
"where do you see yourself 5 years from now"
In your seat
You can't really prepare for the "what would you do in this situation" question. Just answer honestly and let them understand the logic of how you come up with the answer.
Weaknesses - as above highlight a couple and show what you have changed to minimise them
Where do you want to be. Answer honestly providing it demonstrates that you will be highly motivated to work for them for at least the next two years

Good luck 😀
Just say nothing for a few seconds......
Think before you speak.
Be honest.
be relaxed but not laid back. Communicate well. Look neat and tidy. Be alert. You'll be fine.
Be ready for "So why do you want to work for.. XYZ?"
Look at them, don't shuffle or cover up your mouth.
More importantly, try to get your interviewers talking about their own stuff! If they are not particularly experienced at interviews, (pleased to be asked), they will happily do so without noticing you have pulled it round backwards, and will leave feeling happy. (ie - you are a good candidate!).
Dont rush to fill the silence with an ill conceived answer.
Remain calm and act rationally.
Or is that in case of fire?
Don't forget to reverse the situation at the end, ask them why you should work for them, why is the guy currently in the position leaving, do they have a good record of supporting staff in progressing there careers (they will say yes) but ask them exactly what they do, what are the plans for the company for the next 5 years, what does that mean in practical terms etc etc.
What you ask them can be as important as the answers you give, and should often be the same questions from your viewpoint instead of theirs.
Oh! and check out their website and make sure you have some of your own questions about the company etc
It p1sses me off when people turn up for an interveiw without a pen, sounds obvious but it often happens.
Also if you ride a single speed or a 29er dont mention that either.
zedsdead's right.
If you really want the job...
In your final questions at the end, think of a question that shows you're really considering how you'd actually do the job for them.
My work is about forecasting and budgeting, so engaging the recruiting manager in a discussion about what the key business cost/revenue drivers are means they're forced to imagine me already in the job.
Also if you can find a way to flatter your potential manager without being sycophantic the job is yours.
I had a job interview last Friday - didn't get the job but that was because they decided I was over-qualified and would be bored in 6 months. Thankfully that is exactly how I felt too! Upshot is that they have something comming up that might be better suited.
I have the opinion that with the weaknesses question they don't really care what the weakness is (everyone has one right?) just how you manage it - so I tend to get lost in detail and lose sight of the bigger picture at times. I handle this through creating milestones throughout the project that force me to step back and evaluate progress. I'll let you use that if you like 🙂
If the job description has competencies list at least two specific positive examples for each competency and one negative example where you've failed, but in addition think about how you'd do things differently next time. Oh and if there is a contact for informal enquires speak to them before the interview, and ask for feedback after the interview too.
Good Luck!

Either that or "a wee dab of speed" before you go in...
"Dinnae try too hard though eh, ye might get the ****in' joab"

If you can think fast enough it's often possible to turn the negative into a positive.
As mentioned above "what's you're weaknesses?". Maybe the answer is "I like to get things perfect rather than just fit-for-purpose" - it's not 'really' a weakness.
Personally my favourite reply to a question went like this
Q "Do you take risks?"
A "Yes I do"
{Stunned silence in the interview room.}
A "Everything you do is a risk. The key is to minimise the risk and the handle any impact appropriately".

This is actually my weakness, but I like the solution, I will use that if asked 🙂
Thanks for all the tips everyone!!

That sounds like a made up weakness for a job interview 😉
