What you really need it what we've got at work a 50ft reach 360 with a set of hydraulic tree shears. Much fun can be had with them 🙂

Sorry guys, no winch in the post this morning. 🙁

I'm sulking more than you guys.

On the plus side, I cleared my escape routes and got a strap 2/3 the way up the tree.

Just to keep things ticking along....... You really need to sort the weeds in that yard. And are the logos and valves lined up?

Kevevs, I'm still waiting for my Tirfor to arrive. I'd hoped it would be here today. So, Monday morning I'm in Edinburgh, if it's here and the weather is still good, I'll have a bash in the afternoon. It gets dark here around 3.30. I don't think night felling is officially recognised as safe.

I put a couple of straps about 30 feet up the tree today. Even that high the girth of the tree is wider than I could reach around with my arms. iDaves pic wouldn't be that far out if I tried it with the Fergie.

cool. I think there's a few of us anticipating a happy outcome. Y'know, just in case we happen to be in the same position in future (not likely). Pressure's on mate, Sort that ****in' tree out!

Definitely get it filmed...with two cameras in case one gets squashed.

I'm expecting a more epic version of this...

Mcmoonter, don't worry about it being dark. This a shared STW experience! I'm sure Troutie could sort a night felling light to ensure the show goes on.

Windblows are a touch unpredictable.
Yours looks simple, but complicated by the shed.

Usual approach for clearing a wind blow edge would be to sever and pull back the stem, however I can't see our tractor winch pulling in fast enough, even kicked into 1080, for the stem to clear the shed before hitting the deck. The hydraulic ones I've played with were slower still.

Next option would be sideways. However the little Fergie and tirfor will not be upto the job if there is even the slightest complication, shouldn't underestimate the ability of one branch to suspend a whole tree. You don't just have the weight of the tree. but the forces acting on it too.
Sideways with the aim to skid down the tree to the left of the shed if space is too tight to tie to other tree as earlier. Tractor winch behind tree in position to pull lengthways, snatch block to the side for sideways pull, big breakfast and strong shoulders for winch clutch.

Seen, but not tried, is a massive selection of pulleys, cables and counterweights to gently lower offending tree in stages after severing it.

40 ton hymac - can dominate most domestic situations.

Set fire to it is the most genius answer I've seen so far.

I can't help thinking that even just waving a video camera in the general direction of this process is an almost certain kiss of death for the pool house.

re: the pic - I did wonder about building a frame to catch the tree above the pool house if the worst did happen?

I'm alive, the Pool Hoose lives!

It didnt fall exactly where I hoped. 😕

But no damage done to life nor limb.

I'm off to audition for Fred Dibnah's stunt double.

My mum took fright and ran off with the video when it fell.

This comes pretty close to the rush!

You should have put the camera on a tripod. Mothers are not to be trusted with extreme videoing.

Is there no footage at all then?

The winch worked a treat. It pulled the tree almost reburying the root ball. I could see a bend in the tree under the winch tension.

I think my felling cut wasnt level. Thats probably why it fell to the side.

Thanks for all your support on this one!

Yay! You are STW's conduit to manlyness. Better build yourself another log store.

I like the way that you've protected your head from 10,000kg of falling wood with an orange plastic hat.

i am confused.

This and the balance bike thread are my fave things on STW in years. 😀

Good work all. As the old thought experiment goes:

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to [s]hear[/s] start a thread on it, does it make a sound?"

Good work and I'm glad you survived to tell the tale! You can tell Forth Ports they can go ahead with the biomass plant at Rosyth now and you can keep them in fuel for the next decade or two; probably without putting much of a dent in your log stores!
