Due to previously being out of work for 18 months a running up a debt, it seems I can no longer have a credit card, despite having full time employment now
I want to go to northern France to have a look around the war sites in a few weeks
I was going to fly there and hire a car, but without a credit card is this going to be impossible?
I can get a pre paid credit card but I'm not sure if they are accepted
Also, will I have a problem with hotels and b&b's?
I dont have a credit card and travel a fair bit but haven't had any issues yet. I've hired cars, booked hotels and paid for everything either on debit card or by cash.
Pre-paid credit cards are accepted everywhere normal credit cards are, there all I use now, due to not trusting myself with credit.
many places even within Europe don't accept debit cards from other countries.
I usually just put a couple of hundred quid on my pre-paid card as a back up, in case my debit card is refused.
ps; get the pre-paid card through your own bank, then its normally just a matter of using on-line or telephone banking to get money transferred to it the same day or the next day at latest, with a third party card it can take a few days, not what you want when on holiday.
if you want to use a pre-pay for car hire make sure you load it up enough for the deposit and expect it to take up to 2 weeks for it to be refunded.
Do Barclays do a pre paid one?
If that's who you bank with, best to go into your bank and ask them, they often don't advertise the fact that they will do them for existing customers.
All the hire companies I've contacted are saying that I need a credit card in my name ๐
I had a credit card to take traveling but halifax messed up the direct debit and it didn't get paid off til near the end of my trip, so for most of the time I was using a debit card. Wasted loads of money on fees which I wouldn't have got with the credit card. It works though.
Give Carhire3000 a call
I'm pretty sure they can do it without a CC as long as you take all the Ins. and CCWs etc. with no excess
I've just used a pre-paid card from FairFx who seem to offer the best exchange rate http://www.fairfx.com/ and you can go online to check your balance.
You get the exchange rate based on the day you charge up the card so by the time you use the card the exchange rate may have moved for you or against you.
I'm being told pre paid credit cards aren't accepted either
