Why is it when you are 4 motors behind the car at front, the lights turn green and it takes an age to get going. Have they been texting or maybe have to engage brain before 1st gear. Really bad when its 4 way traffic lights with a rarely used posh scheme side road getting one of the 4 slots

The good news is that with road work traffic lights they factor in a ton of extra time after red because they don't trust the minimum wage lad to programme it correctly so you can hitch yourself on the back of a line 😉

Maybe they're just not in a rush to get to the next set of lights.

And NO, you don't have to wait until the car in front has set off before thinking about selecting a gear, engaging clutch and releasing the handbrake, grrrr. I spend quite a lot of my work time in closed off lanes at road works, and you're right. People look straight down at their phones as soon as they stop and seem to rely on the person behind beeping to let them know the lights have changed.

The country should have a collective decision to treat traffic lights like the start of a grand prix. The moment they go green everyone should immediately set off as fast as possible trusting that the person in front of them will also do so.

These lights are more of issue up hill on a bike. I have a long stretch near home, I've no chance of clearing the controlled zone during one cycle of the lights even if I'm at the front when the lights change. Doesn't stop motorists giving me dirty looks as I grind up hill.

Induction loop traffic lights are another bug bear, try getting them to recognise you're there on a carbon road bike.

Because they're waiting for all the cars that jumped the red light in the other direction to finish coming through the works.

Half the time. The other half when I've scraped through before red it's green at the other side!

Well, I blame stumpyjon for that...

Auto stop/start isn't that slow, slow-er, yes but it's not unreasonably slow if the driver is ready to set off in advance. I. E. Paying attention to the traffic lights.

Even quicker if it's mated to an auto box

Even betterer if you are the second in the queue, let the first driver take thier time pulling away then slowly accelerate leaving a gap of about three cars to you and the first driver..

Then..

Look longingly in your rear view mirror to watch the driver behind go apoplectic and blow all blood vessels in eyes and actually watch steam appear from ears.. as they accelerate very quickly right up to your bumper then have to slam brake because they have an innate ability to read the speed of the traffic they are driving in..

Then..

Wait for the driver behind to give you the flappy hand signal that tries in vein to initiate you to drive quicker...

Then .. less than politely raise a two finger salute back at them..

Oh the joys of driving curiously..

Recently in long running roadworks, someone from the back of a very long queue just overtakes the whole queue and pushes in the front.

I know it's advised to share lanes and "zip" in with queues on dual lanes, but this was just overtaking on the opposite side and no oncoming traffic due to the lights.

Many bloods were boiled I'm sure. He got away with it no problem though.
