Im going to be retiling the bathroom soon if Mrs Nomad has her way, so to make life easier, I'm looking at tiling on top of the existing tiles to the wall behind the bath.
This might be a numb question, but do i need to do anything other than clean the old tiles before I tile on top?
Cheers
Seems a lazy shortcut to do that but possibly seal with PVA solution before retiling???
They need scoring so the adhesive sticks to them. Try using a a carbide tipped tool.
I recently tiled over our kitchen tiles, I scored the existing tiles with sand paper then cleaned with sugar soap.
They're still on the wall so I guess it has worked.
Ffs, don't go anywhere near it with pva. You can use mapei grip plus adhesive right on to old tiles if they're solid. Don't use cheap adhesive or powdered, cement based either. You don't really need to score or abraid them if using the above, you could potentially cause problems doing so. Give them a good scrub with strong degreaser and rinse well. Use mapei ultracolour grout to finish.
Also, only use ceramic wall tiles, not porcelain or any kind of natural stone, way too thick and heavy.
Best advice is get a tiler in.
It is possible to tile over old tiles but if your mrs is anything like mine she'll want the posh new tiles up to about 2ft square and about 10mm thick, this'll cause you all sorts of problems.
Funkys there again! A boring +1 for mapei adhesives!!
