does anywhere sell a pitch/site for them to the general public, like they do Static caravans? Put simply I don't want a full size static, they're a fortune. We do stay in camping pods each year and find them perfect for us, so we'd like on of our own in a campsite in either Wales, Scotland or the Lakes...anywhere good for mountain and roadie biking basically. Anyone seen anywhere that allows you to install one of your own in their campsite?

That's a novel idea.

Maybe contact the site you'd like to have one on and suggest it.

Surely it's gonna work out way more exprensive than hiring though? Or are they really expensive now?

Are you talking about the full wooden variety or the tented ones?

We looked a while back (for the farm) but it was about £15k for a wooden one, fully kitted out mind.

Didn't bother with the tented ones in the end..

I think if we do go for it, we'll build our own.

Its the full wooden ones i'm after...seems relatively easy to find, but i need a hard pitch at a campsite, and finding one is what seems to be the problem.

I thought after the planning changes in Scotland a couple yearrs ago we would have seen more hutting sites/communities by now. One of these pod things would be a good option. Perhaps the demand wasn't as big as first thought.

Don't static owners get hosed for pitch fees though? Would the same not be the case with what you want to do?

but it was about £15k for a wooden one,

they usually charge about 40/50 a pod don't they? so 15k/50quid = 300 nights. how much time you actually going to spend in them, not best just hiring?

I guess unless you plan to rent it out yourself, seems a bit of hassle though. And would you want to be continually stuck to the same pod?

Static van fees are usually fairly hefty (£2k+ for most places), that won't include electricity, insurance, etc. Fancy parks can easily be more than double this.

You can pitch touring caravans on many sites for a "season". Many sites would let you stay Easter-October holiday for about £1k (and I don't think you have any local authority rates to contend with etc that way). Popular/better/fancier sites will be more. You will usually have to clear out over winter though - and store the van somewhere (although some will provide this as a service0. If you hate the thought of a caravan (which I get) then I'd have thought a Shepherd's Hut would provide something more middle-class glamping looking (with none of the comforts or practicality of an actual van!) but might still be OK on some sites.

I'd struggle to make the maths for a glamping pod work unless (1) you owned the land; (2) you used it an awful lot (when you might want some more facilities); (3) you were able to build it yourself in some way to make it really cheap.

Yeah, well we were looking for extra income for the farm see. One option was to convert the Barn into accommodation, but we couldn’t get planning for three separate accommodation “units”, only two seemed to be allowed (planning restrictions) so for the £300k investment it didn’t seem worth it.

So we then looked at glamping pods in the valley, we have access so no issues there. Could fit 5-6 of them in a shared space with a sauna/shower unit separate from the pods..

Anyway, after costing and expected take up it didn’t work out financially... whilst the farm is near (is actually classified as in)  the Dales, it’s actually a 15-20min drive to Coldstones Cut/Pateley and we felt if folks wanted to stay “in” the Dales then they’d probably want to stay “up there”

Anyway, didn’t work out so we gave it a miss.

Static site fees - you are looking north of £3k per year, so many sites will be looking for this !

I've built a few, latest one is on a caravan chassis so easily towable. I was thinking about this the other day, find a caravan site you like with a storage option, when you need it they'll put it on pitch for you, the benefit being that when you are not on site you are paying a cheaper storage fee than the rental for a static/permanent pitch. Plus you can take it elsewhere easily whenever you fancy a change of site. Got a website if you want a gander - hutbuilder.co.uk

OR put it in postierich's garden...

Before we swapped from caravan to motorhome we used to use a site in Wareham for winter seasonal pitching. From end Sept to end Feb cost £500 inc water/drainage but not electric. Strictly speaking only supposed to use it for 30 days total in that time but no one ever checked. The summer season (March to Sept) cost £2000, although we never did that.
They also did storage at £40 p/m with a £5 towing fee to put it on a pitch and take it off again if you wanted a cheaper option or weren’t going to be able to use enough to justify the seasonal pitch cost.

And if you'd like to be in the heart of the Cotswolds, the shed in our back garden is available for a very reasonable £30 a night. You can even keep your bikes in the garage 🙂
