Got a friend from Sweden coming over to stay in Bristol for a few weeks for work this summer. They're bringing their two 9-year old boys with them and I was wondering what they could do with them over the summer in or near the city? They're quite outdoorsy (was thinking Cheddar Gorge) but any ideas would be welcome! Thanks.

If you have a few weeks you'll be getting out to the countryside plenty I assume.

I went on an industrial canal boat tour when I was a kid, that was fun 🙂

Ashton Court will be good for a day.

Boat trip out on the river from town towards Hanham Lock.

SS Great Britain is excellent (avoid on Saturdays/Sundays if possible though...gets rammed).

Go on a kids climbing thing organised by Undercover Rock (climbing centre at St Werburghs).

Symonds Yat just over the bridge for a spot of canoeing and camping.

Forest of Dean for good all-the-family cycling.

I should clarify - I'm not in Bristol though I'll visit once or twice. I think they're worried, probably justifiably, about being stuck in a strange city with two bored kids! I think canoeing on the Wye could be nice weekend out.

Thanks, good tips DD.

Nice river trip up the Severn to Gloucester and a day out at the Fred West garden design centre 😆

Bristol town centre's not great to be honest. I'd recommend wandering the back streets up the Park st (is it?) hill - where the Gothic cathedral and uni are. The buildings are decorated with some scary weirdness - don't do acid when you're there...

The Zoo's good.
Canal boats trips, SS Gt Britain. Skateboarding (if they have them) by Lloyds Bank, Chepstow Castle is a goodie, so is Caerphilly further away.
Kites on the Downs? Bikes on the Gorge cyclepath? Giant's Cave, arse-sliding by the bridge, St Werburgh's city farm (or Bemmie), drug-running in Easton to earn some pocket-money.

Where in Bristol will they be staying?
We did 3 house-swaps with Swedish families when our kids were that age and had very positive reports from the people who stayed here.

Bristol Zoo is great

Avon Valley Country Park http://www.avonvalleycountrypark.com/

Boat trips around the city

Hot air balloon trip (if they're flush)

Yep, Park Street it is. Town centre is a bit crapola...true. @bristol is also good for kids but expensive.

That "gothic cathedral" is the Wills Memorial Building (no church in there....all part of the Uni), and was actually built in the twentieth century 😯 though you'd never guess!

Ashton Court also has an ace miniature railway.

here

or there is a Avon valley railway.

Wookey hole

Walks round Leigh woods, ride along the Pill path and Bristol to Bath cycle path.

great playground by Blaise Castle.

But some of the local kids that hang round there can be a bit iffy to say the least.

Loads of good ideas in there. I am sure someone runs mountain bike training (with bikes inc) for kids as well but can't find the link at work.

I've seen a couple of pirate themed tours around the harbour, might be suitable for kids and occassionally you get sexy lady pirates as well.

@bristol is not far from there with loads of experiments and stuff that you can play with. Might start getting pricey though.

Well LSD wasn't invented til the 1940s so that seems to tie in.

I can't believe no one has yet suggested:

Car jacking
Graffiti
Vandalism
Anti social behaviour

or, everyones favorite, bike theft!

Note: If you're going to make crass jokes, at least spell it properly.

So much for the OP possibly forwarding a link for the thread to his Sveeedish friends 🙄

Forest of Dean - Go Ape is a fun afternoon, and there are half a dozen other things you drive past that are great that way too e.g. Puzzlewood.

As above, science center, WSM beach, ice skating, Wookey Hole

There's At-Bristol and the Aquarium.

Otherwise plenty of good ideas here. SS Great Britain was surprisingly good when I finally went after 20-something years of assuming it would be shit.

Thanks all - tons of good ideas... I knew the STW hive mind would be equal parts informative and perverse. Quite fancy a visit to the SS Great Britain myself (help! I'm turning into my Dad).

At-Bristol - cheaper than the Zoo and the Aquarium, plus it can easily take up most of the day if you want it to - Animate It section is great, as is the Planetarium.
