I'm fairly sure where I live is a wee bit wetter than where you live Matt!. 🤣
No London marathon next year also for my daughter or myself 😒 . Had a really shite awful day in work today and came home to my commiserations magazine.
Maybe! - I'm thinking more underfoot....
No London Marathon ballot place for me this year. 13 years in a row so I should probably take the hint that I'm not welcome.
I thought after 5 years, you got in?....
Another rejection for me, think that is 10!
They scrapped the 5 year thing ages ago, too many people applying, not enough places.
Think yourselves lucky. Apart from the crowds I think it’s quite a dull race.
Go trail running in the woods instead.
Jog on for me later, looks like a nice warm evening for a few boring laps around the park over the road from my hotel..
Oh, the joy 🤪
Popped along to Southville Running Club tonight for the first time. Even though I didn’t opt for the slowest group, my group leader (well, it was just me and him) was 76! What a ledge!
I'm in the fortunate position of entering in November for the championship start again, but I can understand the disappointment for a huge number of people being constantly rejected for such an iconic race. I love the London Marathon has have been fortunate enough to run it the past 3 years.
I submitted an appeal against the Bournemouth Marathon result, will see if it is entertained, in my opinion I have a pretty clear case. The first guy across the line ran a shorter total distance than everyone else, and a different route, so he should either be DQed or a corresponding amount of time added to his finish time.
London is not a dull race by any stretch of the imagination.
The Boston (UK) marathon on the other hand, after covering about 2 miles I ran the remainder of the race pretty much on my own, That could be described as dull, but London, no, the crowd and support all the way along the course makes it anything but dull.
Fortunately, like TF I should have a championship start for London, due to the above mentioned Boston (UK) marathon.
Well done Rich at Bournemouth, I think you have a nailed on case if the other guy didn't run the correct route. Despite not getting your target time, another immense performance. Good work.
dull = the treadmill i shall be confined to for the next week or so.
anyone got any secrets to making a treadmill workout less boring ?
Is the treadmill Zwift compatible?
Popped along to Southville Running Club tonight for the first time.
I ran with them for a while a few years ago. Nice bunch AFAIR. Had to stop as I couldn’t keep up with all the talk of estate agents and house prices, not being strictly local. Their sessions were really good for training.
I absolutely detest treadmills, so I feel your pain. If it's smart treadmill can you hook it up to Zwift? Either that or watch marathon footage or other races on youtube while running? Perhaps a lobotamy to remove extraneous brain activity!
i have no idea - its unlikely i will have internet capibility for zwift even if it is zwift compatable.
I will download some stuff from youtube i guess - someone suggested i watch the Barkley marathon diaries.
Will also have a watt bike so i'm not slumming it too much. Might take the opportunity to do some power testing.for a base line. but the only thing i hate more than a treadmill is exercise bikes/turbos .... its just so un natural feeling - being trapped in a box with only a treadmill and a turbotrainer was essentially why i got back into running after 10+ years off...

Haha!

Zone out with some music. Do intervals which makes the time go by faster. Pick one where you can see the girls n boys in the spin class bouncing up and down. Watch one of those semi-documentary type shows on Discovery/DMax/youtube whatever.
I just watch some telly on the treadmill. Whatever takes your interest. Lots of hour-long series around, I've done up to 2:30 albeit rarely!

Run outdoors?
Today's lunchtime 5k jaunt included some rather ace weather and colours.

theres always one.
long gone are the days when you could run round the heli deck in the north sea.

^ as a triathlete, you could just work on your swimming.
theres always one.
Yep.
As for the treadmill - I haven’t run on one in my memory - as far as I can remember anyway, but could you programme in interval session into it? The newer ones probably have that facility...maybe? Keeps it a bit more interesting, and you can get more “work” done in a shorter time.
This week's other revelation.
Proper undies.
I picked up a few pairs of M&S finest running undies - all stretch panels, long legs, no seams and wicking things.
Oh how much better are these than usual trunks, including outdoory brand Uber expensive. They are going to be great on hill days as well.
Even better, they were £2.50 a pair.

Anyone else doing The Birmingham half on Sunday? There’s a couple of us all with the same goal of “I’d love a 1:45 but not sure if I’ll get it”, some training is normally needed to get PB’s apparently...
Matt, do you have a link to the undies in question? A few possibilities cropped up on the M&S website but none seemed to entirely match your description.
I've just looked and can't find them. Perhaps end of line. There seems to be a few similar - more money though 🙁
''compression shorts" is another description.
Mine are seamless, no waistband and mid thigh.

Undies? I have always just run in shorts with an inner.
Same here - the inner liner seems to manage 'swingage' ok.
I have some compression shorts for if I’m doing some sprintervaks, but other than that, always just in running shorts with an inner as surfer describes or if I cycle to parkrun, I run commando in my tri suit. #sexy
Anyway, first time Eastville parkrun for me today. Again, with a hangover FFS. This has to stop! ☹️ Slightly disappointing time of 22.36 but after my summer lay-off and last few weeks of sporadic running, I’m not surprised. The only positive is that I came 3rd in my age category. 😀 Which is MiddleAgedSpread45-49.

I remember drinking and dancing until 5am on a Uni trip to Ireland many years ago. Not a huge amount of alcohol but enough for a lightweight like me, and a lot of dancing 🙂 had a coffee and piece of toast then raced a 10k a couple of hours later. Still ran under 34 mins which was a way off my pb but not too shabby considering. 30 years later if I have more than a couple of glasses of wine or 2 pints I can barely run for 48 hrs.
Youth is wasted on the young....
It was a bit hillier than I expected to be honest - I hadn’t really recced the course - went out like a train too as I started in the slow bunch so the first k was traffic management. Was thinking “hmmm, not feeling so hungover now 🙌” until the first hill - the feeling of acid indigestion as you’re puffing up the hill. Anyway, gives me something to work on. Junior parkrun with dd in the morning - it’s fun trying to stop him going off hard at the beginning. 😀
Organised my first event this morning, a nice wee grassroots 5k trail fun run, fiver entry, my employer matched all entries and donations too, so 500 odd quid winging its way to North Ayrshire food bank.
Loved it, only downside was not getting to run!.
Good work! 👌😇
Terrible run today. Got 4k in and everything hurt. Even my shoulders and arms. So I turned round and walked home 😣😢

wallop, I was struggling through the last k today and passed where I'd parked - wanted to ditch and go home I was feeling so shite but figured I'd done most of it at that stage so might as well post a time - it was always going to be an Eastville pr PB anyway. 😆 You've really been enjoying the last few weeks of getting (back?) into running - so there's bound to be a trough or two amongst the peaks. Reset for the next run and go again - which I'm sure you'll do anyway. If we all chucked it after one day, there wouldn't be a thread as none of us has not had one. 🙂
Cheers DD - that’s the encouragement I was hoping for!
Wise words from DD, chin up Wallop, try not to focus on the negatives, instead the fact you went out in the first place mate.
I sometimes get shoulder pain running, put it down to my desk at work, makes me get out and about a bit more at work.

Both zwift and sufferfest have running modules now. I would be interested in knowing if anyone had a sucsess connecting up with treadmills in the gym? The available information isn't good. I would also be interested in any specific run apps as an alternative.
MSP, "runsocial" may be worth a look. I have used it a little but decided it was more fun watching telly than watching an artificial view going past! Your mileage may vary.....
wallop, we all have days when the body just isn't playing. If you were mad keen, it's probably worth forcing yourself into a recovery run (but even then, making sure to not work too hard). For most people, probably makes more sense to just take a day off 🙂
wallop; you know when you clear that rooty gap between the trees 99 times out of 100, then that one time you are in a heap on the ground? Running is the same! There will be days like that. I did the Mad Haffer yesterday in what was literally, darkest Fife.

Connected treadmills always seem a bit pointless as Zwift etc can't alter speed (maybe incline occasionally).
Cheap Bluetooth footpod more useful, or the cut down Stryd.
I tried a sufferfest running video the other night. It was pretty shite actually.
I ended up just watching the Moto GP. Last Night on the treadmill
After doing dark dark place sufferfest on the watt bike which was a good hard effort and the music/footage worked well.
I just don't think running footage lends it's self well to that type of work out. Too many words to be read as it's never clear from the footage what kind of effort they are putting in as the good lads make the running all look easy.
I'm more likely to try doing a cycling sufferfest work out on the treadmill next time than use the running ones.
Also noticed my 735xt if you tell it your running indoor accrues distance from stride length and I guess the step counter module ? --its certainly not just picking it up from the treadmill as it's reading slightly less than the treadmill.
My mates fenix 3 doesn't have the ability to tell it your doing a treadmill run so it just tries constantly to get a GPS lock and ends up giving no useful distance data.
