I'm up to episode 6. Not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still pretty damn good.

Saw the freebies on Sky3 last weekend, thought it was really poor. Nothing compared with BoB.

Same here I think its a bit slow in comparison to band of brothers and I dont think the characters seem as strong.

I like it, captures what a completely different type of war the pacific theatre was, epsiodes 5&6 are brilliant.

up to episode 5 now, it's ok but glad i didn't have to subscribe to watch it, characters don't seem so defined as BoB, but as it's free i'll watch the others

as AA Gill said there's not a single shot, scene or character you haven't seen before. And the 'japs' don't seem to exist as humans. Still watchable though, quite enjoyed my free weekend pass on chav three. The sound in the firefights was unreal

Thats a good point, the characters are harder to follow as they do not stand out.I really hope it redeems itself in 5 and 6,as sobriety says.

Is The Pacific based on a true story or is it just a 'war film'? Band of Brothers is actually based on the true accounts as written by Stephen Ambrose based on his interviews with the men characterised in the series.

I haven't seen any of it (refuse to pay even more to Sky) but disappointed that people are saying it isn't as good as BoB.

Were the Japanese really so suicidal/cannon fodder as portrayed in this series?

Does Leckie gets back with his lover?

Agree, does not as yet have the impact of BOB, but still enjoying the series

Seems to be- both Sledge and Leckie have written well received books about their experiences.

Not a great series though, imo- as others have said it's really difficult to empathise with the characters. My wife's only watched ep3, set in Australia- she sadi it was like rewatching The Sullivans.

Pretty much. The IJA dehumanised and brutalised its own troops to an extraordinary degree, and had a near-unshakeable belief that a fatalistic disregard for casualties would triumph over superior American numbers and materiel.
