MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Show me videos you've taken recently that you're proud of...or not proud of, in the same way there's an epic thread of photos, I figured I'd start one for MTB films that you've made or starred in.
If I'm lucky it'll put an end to all the new and varying threads with different videos on as people will post them onto the end of this one.
If I could request in advance people post what it was filmed on too that'd save a lot of "what did you use to film that?" questions 😀
go go go!
I've only got one I did with an old Ixus zip tied to the bars... needs a bit of editing maybe 😉 I call it 'night ride with hound'.

but how does the dog know where to run without lights?! 😀
Power of smell!
(thread's going well eh?)
:lol yup! expected a few more people to post their riding videos up... but mark my words this thread will live again!
i'll make sure to post my vids up once i receive my new PC and can get editing, failing that i'll offer TSY's real name up to the person who posts the most videos.
I'm winning so far!
My lad and I did this.
good work mrsparkle! looks like one of my famous sexyparties 😉
Yeah, thanks for reminding me why I've retired from racing. 🙂
Phil, here is mine,
Brian and I enjoying a nice Tuesday around Gisburn Forest back in sunny August this year. 25degree heat!! last ride I did was -4 all day!
Cheers
Scott
You beat me to it! In that case I'll post this....
I did this, all self filmed and what not on a very cheap camera, my first go at making a video ever and in imovie
Aah, I'm on that Hit the North vid somewhere. Here's my effort from this weekend, (behind the camera, there's no way I'd be on the dandy horse)
Edit - it would appear that all the best directors use Focus as the soundtrack.
@2hottie - thats awesome 😀 i dare not show that to mrsconsequence or we'll end up with a dog by new years! what was it filmed on?
@@geetee - lots of ideas for shots in that vid... i especially like the one looking down on top of the rider from the trees, great momentum... quite jealous as its how i'd want the footage from sunday to end up looking but dont have the experience yet to produce something like that (or a rider willing to keep doing stuff over and over in the snow haha). i can see the go-pro on the helmet but what was the other static/panned/handheld stuff filmed on?
@heihei - what was that filmed on? i might have to steal some shot ideas from that one as well 😀 especially like the full facers at the end.
@fourcrossjohn - it feels like there's more of that little film to come... is there more? 🙂
@tthew - brave rider, makes me realise i might need to borrow some better riders for some of my filming ideas... good music choice 😉
Mr consequence! Praise the lord and pass the clementines, you're back. I thought for a while you were, er, (cough), on holiday OR SOMETHING!
Phil - the rider in the video is actually me and the director was actually HeiHei. All the angles, the editing, sound and creative takes on where to put the camera were his work. I just rode the bike (and yes, we did do a lot of takes that involved riding the same section many times).
The GoPro headcam footage is complemented by footage from my Canon G10 and HeiHei's Panasonic GF1.
i've got myself a gorillapod and also a tripod in the post, the gorillapod should help provide some extra low down shots and some interesting shots mounted in the tree branches etc. the tripod is because i reminded myself very quickly watching the footage back from sunday's ride that trying to hold the camera steady or for a smoooooth panned shot is near impossible, borrowed a tripod for the afternoon and wish i had used it for more shots than i did.
the key thing i think i need to remember is the additional non-riding shots that add context, shots like the full-facers, close ups of the chainset and stuff all add meat 🙂
trying to convince a friend to get a go-pro and chest mount to mix in with the static shots.... love the shot it provides with the riders arms and handlebars in the shot at all times.
can't wait to get out filming again!
ohhh and good work heihei, i dont mind admitting i'm jealous 😀
Phil used a Canon powershot Sx200IS, with a Gorilla pod, they're fantastic!I just had the camera attached to it all day which made setting up very easy. I wanted it to be quick as I had the dog with me so didn't want to upset people out on the trail. The Gorilla pod allows you to hang the camera in trees and even lay it on branches like I did in my film at times. Get out filming but be aware it will take time and you will use loads of footage and memory space. You'll also be knackered as running back for the camera can be a slog up hill!! Also remember spare batteries.
looking forward to your work
got 5 batteries (taking it snowboarding in Jan so wanted to be able to be out all day with it)
thinking i'll leave it attached to the gorrillapod most of the time as it seems so versatile, having a camera with rotating lens helps lol. once my proper tripod arrives i'll be taking that out with me too as i'd like to use some panned shots too and hopefully get some longer shots of the nature in which the riding is taking place.
hoping as the weather improves i can convince jo (main riding buddy) to bring out his camcorder as its a full HD thing that cost about a grand so some handheld stuff from that would be great to mix in too.
Sundays "local loop in the snow" ended up with 132 separate takes, whittled it down to 90, and once my comp arrives in the new year i'll be editing a lot of it down.
had so much fun on sunday, very excited about getting the new PC and spending hours chopping it all together 😀 extending the riding experience even further. now i need to think of a name to release my little films under though. MrConsequence is taken by a rap artist i think lol
*BUMP* anyone else got any videos?
First video shot with the camera mounted on the fork; mixed results I think. Shot on the Penmachno trail...
not new, but a proud willy waving moment
😀
not new, but a proud willy waving moment
Quite literally 😯
a literal willy-waving moment!
EDIT - took so long for STW to post i missed the post above!
Phil
GT has covered the equipment we used. I'd make a few observations...
First one is that it takes time, and quite a bit of it. For the snow film we spent ovr 2hrs filming and the same again editing for a 2.5min clip. To get something good therefore, you can't just include it as part of a normal ride - I always pre-agree with others when we're going to film, so then everyone accepts what's involved.
Second one is to have an idea of what you want to achieve, so you're not wasting time out on the trail. I'd ridden this trail a few times, so I had an idea of how I wanted it to look on film - it's a flow trail with some sweet drifty corners and a few floaty jumps, and that's what I wanted to get across.
Last one is commit the time to editing it well - no-one wants to see the dull bits where you're running around triggering the camera etc (although GT's helmet cam footage included the bit with me climbing the tree which might have been quite funny)!
Sounds like you have the right idea so look forward to seeing the results!
hi heihei 🙂
thanks for taking the time to write out some advice!
definitely wouldn't try and include it as part of a normal ride apart from maybe strapping the camera to the goggles/fullface and getting some first-person riding footage of the trails to mix in to projects later.... i do also plan on taking the camera out and about with me when i can though to stop and get the odd nature shot and stuff (extra meat as it were)
spent about 3 hours filming a 1 hour ride on sunday i'd guess, fully expect to be sat at the computer for longer than that to edit it down, i'm planning on editing it with the soundtrack in place so its cut on the beat and follows a sense of rhythm when possible.
the bit we filmed is a local loop so i already had ideas of what shots i wanted to get and i'm pretty happy with the unedited clips so far. In fact for a couple of months all i can think about when riding is what shot/framing would look good on each section... its entering my dreams too 😯
wish the gorrillapod had arrived in time for sunday though (came yesterday) as there's certain shots i could only get low enough to the ground by having to mount the camera on top of my vented helmet and hold the helmet as steady as possible on the ground! (difficult when shivering in the cold)
mrsconsequence wants a video of her doing a particular bit of singletrack when the sun comes out in spring, I've told her how much walking back up and riding over and over it'll take but i dont think she quite understands haha.
i wish i had a decent camcorder as well as the "helmet cam" but budget doesnt allow that at the moment so i'll have to see what i can do using just the helmet cam 🙂 and encouraging friends with equipment to join me.
thanks again for the advice dude and good work on the videos, really enjoyed them!
Fanastic editting HeiHei and as I said before, great riding GeeTee1972 - lovely flourishes too!
I'll have dust off my Trek and come out and join you again sometime soon, although looks like your fitness has bounced right back (or is that just good editting? ;).
Not proud but it's a video all the same - was a fun evening though!
Bristol Renegade Slalom
looks like great fun gary! what camera were you using? really crisp shots 🙂
Canon 550D with the kit lens. Much crisper if I stick the 50mm prime lens on!
Manual focusing and zooming action is mighty hard work!
GaryLake, that looks an awesome event.
I really like the surrey hills and snow vids, and some good tips about to back them up. I'm getting a GoPro for ChrimBo and think you are dead right about the mix of static, helmet and atmosphere shots. Not sure my riding mates would put up with 3 hours of riding disturbance though.
Done this a year or so ago at Penshurst. I used my video function on my Fuji compact and a dog cam helmet cam (a few years old so it's not top dollar).
Also i did this one a few days ago. I had to ride one handed as (as yet) i havent found a way to mount my I Pod to myself or my bike effectively.
Anyone have any ideas on this???
Anyway, riding one handed on snow and ice is a bit dodgy! But i was pleased with this- especially as i was only playing!!
where are you based tthew? 🙂
good work rossi, thought about using electrical tape or something to strap it to the bike? (pimping looking forks btw!)
go on then, I'll bite
music works well pook 😀
and a better one....
A little bit of sheffield..
now the threads taking off a bit can i stop commenting on every vid? 😆 i'm going to end up using the phrase "great vid" wayy to much!
.duncan
I assume it's you lot who've been building down there - what's the plan for that corner near the graveyard where you drop down to the stream? Looks like another berm going in?
A recent video production...
wheelz what camera do you use?
its like you're pedalling to the beat at the beginning 😀
My 1st effort with movie-maker. A compilation of moments mainly from Wednesday evening rides in the Pentlands 'organised' by TheBikeChain, all taken on a wee coolpix 4200 compact. Hadn't thought of putting a film together before, hence the scrapbook style -
Can't get over the lack-of shake / vibration in any of these vids.
wheelz what camera do you use?
It's a Contour HD. If I had to buy a camera again, I'd go with the Go Pro HD though, just because the chest harness is much better for mountain biking videos.
yeah that chest-mount is perfect... that's why i've persuaded my main riding buddy he needs one 😈
Here's another one the lad did:
and a blurry cyclocross one by me.
🙂 good work
@ Pook
the rut just before the stream is going to be turned into a berm however there aren't any more plans for building more after the stream. Work is currently done on the top straight after you come off the open fields, there are already a few tight corners dug in if you drop off to the right hand side quite soon after you cross the road and head down the track. I think the plan is to then take those new corners back towards the main track.
It was a bit of built up wall stuff on the drop down by the tree i was thinking about really, just after before you pop up on to the main path near the graveyard - other stuff I'm not aware of but would happily be shown!
@ coastkid- I like that film, well done. It made me want to go out and ride, and explore, with a hip flask full of Jura and a thermos full of coffee!
Nice one....
Its what i like to do rossi46... 😮
just got around to watching that vid.... cant wait to ride again 😀 good work
Coastkid - cracking video. Something a bit different - nice.
Yeah, like that.
@ philconsequence, (from page 1)
Based near Northwich, Delemere is the closest useful place for a decent ride.
GoPro HD (720p). Song: Listen by Urban Species (turn it up to 11)
A recent one 🙂
i think my new PC might be arriving today... how exciting 😀
any recommendations on editing software gentlemen?
@euro 😀 only just had the chance to check your vid as my connection at home was horrific and wouldn't load any vids... you've got a very steady helmet i must say!
Good vid euro.
Father Christmas didnt bring me a GoPro, i must've been naughty sometime in the year! I shall now rob a bank to get one- i am officially skint....
new PC arrived yesterday, Adobe premiere loaded, "snow ride jo" footage imported... 2 hours editing then i finally click on "ripple edit" which means the last 2 hours learning/cutting and moving around could have been done in 5 minutes, lesson learnt, bed time.
more editing tonight but with increased efficiency!
Slowly working through 100GB of video from a recent trip to spain with switchbacksdh, this is a little compilation i knocked together in a morning after seeing a GT5 trailer on TV
Compilation of some clips from the summer. All of it shot in BC, but definitely fits in the jey-trail-XC category. ;o)
some cracking vids here.
love the way you can see the suspension working hard on oink's vid 😀
good work burts... holiday or lucky enough to live there? 🙂
my first vid 🙂
be gentle.... 😳

Look into 3 point editing, it saves a lot of time and is pretty much the standard way to get a rough cut which can then be fine tuned if necessary with all the other editing tools such as ripple etc.
Oh and if possible and if you haven't already, I would look into Premiere CS5, it's way better than previous CS versions as in it actually handles HD footage properly.
I may have missed you already mentioning it but how are you getting on with that "cheaper" gopro alternative you posted about getting?
cc on your edit, generally a nice pace (possibly a bit long though) and the footage looks good, but I would avoid using so many cross dissolve video transitions, majority of cuts on anything will be straight cuts as loads of dissolves tends to look a bit cheap/tacky. Also noticed a few times that the audio wasn't cross dissolved - always do this as it "eases" it in better (ooer) and doesn't sound so jarring. It may also be worth looking into L-cuts.
PhilC - I'd probably have liked that if you'd condensed it to around 90s running time.
Great effort for a first go tho.
cheers chaps 🙂
tom, good idea on the L-cuts... watched it through so many times today i'd stopped noticing the audio! will edit down a shorter version and sort out the audio at some point, think i'll keep the music and edit that down as i love the pace and feel of it with the snowy landscape.
getting rid of most of those dissolves will take some time but can definitely see it needs to be done.
overall i'm pretty pleased with it for a first go using the computer, using the software (cs5) and using a computer to edit a video since 9 years ago at college.
here's another from the summer - same gopro HD cameras this time edited using final cut pro by a friend, (I use premiere CS5 - above video)
If that vid's anything to go by, Surrey Hills looks like a well fun place to ride - loads of little kickers and stuff 🙂
oh go on then, here's another fun one...
Loving euro and burt's Vids very cool!
Nice one oink, haven't been Chicksands for ages and its got me wanting to ride the dual again 🙂 Wondering whether the conditions will be up to much tomorrow..
Chaps - I'm having a mare getting mov files so I can edit them on windows.
I've installed Premiere Pro 7 but that won't import mov files. It just does nothing.
I'm trying to convert to avis but am losing massive amounts of quality. Also despite the created avi being 1024x576, on import to Ppro, it reverts to 768x576 randomly.
What are your foolproof tried and tested processes, programmes and steps to getting mov files edited on a PC?
pook - the vid i did was filmed on Hdmax extreme which saves the footage as .mov files. I'm running Adobe Premiere pro cs5.... expensive software and your pc system has to be running quite a specific/high spec for the program to work. cyberlink power editor (think thats the name) if i remember correctly can do .MOV files
One short vid from this years Euro Road Trip
