Is a deerstalker hat ever appropriate outside of deerstalking?

An outfitters near my office is selling rather fetching ones.

Now, when riding my Brompton or cargo bike I tend to wear either a broad-brimmed Tilley hat, a Gore-Tex winter cap or a silly white beany. It occurs to me that a deerstalker would keep the ears warm and stay secure when tied flaps-down, provide a peak and neck coverage and might even fit reasonably well under a helmet (again, flaps down).

What is the collective view of such headwear? 🙂

(and don't start on me about helmets. I am heavily insured, have private medical insurance, have no dependants, pay more tax than many of you and am capable of managing risk. This is a style discussion only) 8)

you have a brompton and therefore a beard

beards and deerstalkers go hand in hand so i'd go for it

You will look like a prat, especially on a Brompton or cargo bike.

Somehow, I don't think this will worry you, so go ahead.

If you want warmth, I recommend a motor-cyclist's balaclava which sill provide full head insulation and will fit under a helmet. There again, that won't look suave and city-slicker-like, either.

sombrero - keep your speed down though, foldover can be highly unstylish

Foldover is the key problem with the Tilley hat. The lack of foldover is the key potential advantage that I see in the deerstalker.

I wanted a Tweed bike cap from CtBM, but my wife used her veto. Maybe you could add some ear flaps to one of those?

I know. Well, I don't know but I assumed you would 😉

The Rapha Winter cap would meet all your requirements, but the deerstalker would be rather more dashing.

ah, but have you considered ribbon-flutter ? Get cheesyfeet's badboy up over 15mph and you'll sound like a plague of locusts

with a sombrero there'd be none of that concern

Are you actually supposed to go abroad "flaps down". Should a gentleman be seen in such a state of attire? Is "flaps down" the millinery equivalent to brown shoes after 6 pm?

If this is about style, then it's got to be flaps up! Flaps down will make you look like a dishevelled street gentleman.

I'm very tempted by a deerstalker. I like this band a lot and they pull the look off well.
