Anyone else suffering or suffered with tennis elbow, and how did you ‘cure’ it? I’ve been suffering a dull ache now for months - feels like the tendons tightening up then not ‘releasing’ properly. Got to the point I can’t take a bottle from the bike with my right arm as squeezing it is painful.
For reference I never play tennis or golf. I’m fairly sure it’s ‘gravel bike elbow’ as it only really started during the Badger Divide back in August.

I suffered with it about 12 years ago, After a year or so of various remedies I had the injection. It was painful as **** but completely cured it and it has never returned,.

I had it for about a year after spending an afternoon sorting 1600 reclaimed bricks. The action of picking them up one at a time to inspect and stack really ****ed it up.

Eventually it went on its own.

As a tennis player I found that a cheap eBay Velcro strap wrapped round just below the elbow definitely helps me

Second the cheap velcro band. The ones with the rubber lozenge in that gently presses into the effected area are the best. Also, acupuncture.

That’s a great read Martin, thanks. Like his view on holistic treatment!

Is it similar to IT band syndrome e.g. tight muscles increasing tension across a tendon which in turn aggravates a bursa?

My masseuse advised regular icing of the bursa to reduce inflammation whilst stretching the relevant muscles (tricep I guess in case of elbows?).

I had Accupuncture on mine on the recommendation of a friend and the medic at work, was very sceptical about if it would work, booked an appointment, had to have 2 sessions to get rid completely, worked really very well not been back for 5 years.

Had it a couple of years ago, aggravated when doing rough MTB descents.

Weight training got rid of it, but I do much less of that since Covid and have started to get a few twinges again.

🙁

I've had it for around 6 months now. I think mine is classed as golfers elbow as the pain is underneath the elbow. Nothing to add I'm afraid other than I haven't really been resting it much and it is getting slowly better. It often wakes me up at night as it really stiffens up while I'm asleep.

Search online for specific exercises using a small dumbell. These concentrate on controlled extension of the affected tendons by resting the wrist on a hard surface, lifting the wrist with the other hand and then slowly letting it drop.
I put up with pain for over a year before doing this but the exercises cleared it up in a matter of weeks

I've had tennis and golfers elbow both sides probably due to my work. This came back several times.

The tennis elbow on right was by far the worst. After suffering with this for months it was alleviated by a cortisone injection within 48 hours. The injections had mixed results at the other sites. Changing routine at the gym along with upping the weight helped a lot too. What helped the most was avoiding doing things that aggravated things in the first place & since changing jobs I've had no reoccurrence.

Rub on ibuprofen gel. It really seems to work.

I’ve had it on and off for about 10 years. Had many injections which works for 4-6 months before it’s starts playing up again. I learnt to live with it until it gets really bad again and then have to rest or get an injection.
Then a mate of mine recommended a Theraband flex bar which has been bloody amazing. Do the exercises everyday for 12 weeks and I’m pain free for the first time in ages.

@13thfloormonk could well be bursa related. Having a prod the pain seems to be centred on the small nobbly bit of the elbow, however the tricep tendon seems to be the major source of pain when I straighten & flex my arm.

Ibuprofen gel just hasn’t worked, although restricting my forearm with a strap seems to alleviate the pain.

Looking at all the replies the light weight physio and ice packs seems to be the best course of action

I tried all sorts to get rid of it.
Eventualy got sent to a physio by my doctor after months of suffering.
On my second trip there he asked if I'd like to try acupuncture.
Gave it a shot as nothing else seemed to have worked and it was total gone within a week.

I have it along with general forearm tendon problems - basically as I do a lot of typing for work, play bass and drums there’s a lot of different repetitive actions which have caused problems.

I use one of the elbow straps as previously mentioned, take ibroprofen and/or use the gel, but I’ve also found that the exercises in this book can really help:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1572240393/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_FXVPFbQ8E3FRT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

It was recommended to me by a bass player and it has really worked.

I had it in my right arm, probably due to poor posture while using a mouse. Injections didn't work for me. I cured it by smashing my radius in a bike crash - couple of operations, months in plaster, a good long rest. It's never come back. Extreme but effective.

Now that's a proper solution. See also: Amputation below the shoulder, or shooting yourself in the knee to take your mind off the elbow.

I’ve had this on and off for years. Exercises that have helped were the dumbell exercises described above both with palm facing up and and down. A heavy enough weight that you’re straining the last couple
Of reps. Also using a crutch or in my case a golf club with your arm out straight hold the club at 90 degrees to your arm and Rotate your forearm 180 degrees repeat this 10-12 times for 3 sets

Years ago I had tennis elbow from playing tennis - sorted by upping the grip size on my rackets.

Also more recently from climbing - that was harder to sort - physiotherapist gave me loads of exercises - weighted rotating exercises and resistance bands for my hands. Seems to have worked in the end.

Reviving this thread after being diagnosed with Golfers Elbow just wondering if anyone’s had any experience of using Ergon grips to alleviate the pain?

I use ergon grips, and I don’t get any pain when riding, or after.
I do, however get elbow pain after riding my gravel bike, or playing nintendo for 5hrs.
Little strap on support has virtually cured it though.
I think my one was about a fiver on amazon.

Usually an imbalance between the two opposing muscles, if you work the opposite muscle it will tighten up as it gets stronger taking the strain off the other tendon. Gripping things with a more open hand will also help because both set of muscles are working equally.

Had golfers elbowabout 10 years ago and it was a nuisance. acupuncture fixed it.

I have seen a Chiropractor with a K Laser for another injury and it worked wonders, see if you can find someone with one local to you.

This +1.

You need a dumbell and some plates, not the fixed weights as some of the exercises involve putting the weight on one end, lifting it up with the other hand then letting the wrist rotate slowly back down. You could probably mimic it with a heavy bar (like a set of bike forks?) or something and just hold it off center though.

golfers and tennis elbow are nothing to do with how you grip

you need proper professional diagnosis not a quack

Mostly it settles with conservative treatment and / or steroid injections but not always

A NHS MSK Doctor had diagnosed it, he had suggested, as well as the exercise and band to try different thickness grips, tbh think he rode as he said to try and get the bike as plush as possible, wonder if I can get coil springs on prescription

I started to get elbow pain after doing pull ups and digging in the garden. Tried all the usual exercises and while they helped, I was never completely pain free.
Had a twinge in my shoulder one day so started doing resistance band exercises (internal/external rotations and pull parts) as a warm up and my elbow pain completely disappeared!

It was called stone masons elbow or carpenters elbow before toffs games were invented (only joking!) I suffered with it for years, had the injections, velcro bands and physio. It’s now gone and perhaps because I realised that having a phone crammed to my ear was causing the problem. My mate had the same problem and now working from home and on zoom calls is ok! Hope this helps, take care all.
