Got to hang around a few hours while my dad gets his insides examined at James Cook hospital today. Anywhere you can suggest?

Bike Scene at Guisborough is pretty close by.

Bikescene in Guisborough is my LBS. It's a good shop, plenty of nice bikes and knowledgeable staff. It's a pretty busy place, I wouldn't say it has a stop for coffee and have a natter feel to it though.

Westbrook cycles in Stokesly is also good, probably more roady biased. It has better coffee and cake nearby than Bikescene if that's a factor for you.

There's a Go Outdoors under the Tees Flyover if you want some tat!

Westbrook it is, and then Great Ayton for an ice cream.

Don't go to Bike Scene, It's like a Santa's grotto for cyclists!
If you do go, take a hanky cos you'll dribble a lot.

Bit weird - I grew up in Guisborough and I have sort of got used to nobody having the slightest clue where it is. And now a load of strangers pop up with detailed knowledge of the local shops!!

I only used to know where Gissy was cos you had to go through it to get to Scarborough.
Bike Scene's been my LBS since they were in the marketplace. (& I'm 45 miles away!)

Bikescene charged more for 29er innertubes when I lived there (and kept them behind the counter).

This was back when everyone rode 26" wheels and the locals looked at me funny when I trued up as an outsider on my "suppose it would be Ok as a commuter"* SS Swift!

Same here. Felt like growing up in the proverbial arse end of nowhere but now everyone seems to know where it is because of the awesome riding "up the woods" and the decent bike shop nearby.

Was back home at the weekend visiting Grandma Devash and they've opened a Weatherspoons, a hipster wine bar and an artisan bakery!

Bike scene are swines.

"I don't need another bike"

"of course, but need and want are two different things, aren't they" 🙂

"Ohhh, look at the pretty shiny!"

----

Oh and look at the posh buggers showing off their upbringing in Guisborough - Eston was where the cool kids lived.

In my job I've come across a few from Eston. 😉

That really doesn't surprise me.

There are/were a lot of very good people in Eston, but more than you would want that weren't.

At least we weren't Grangetown.

More bargain's to be had at Westies, they'll always knock a few quid off whatever you're buying, Bikescene's top dollar all the way!

Westbrooks all the way, best staff, best service, best discounts, loads of stock as well. NRG Cycles new shop in Thornaby might be open by then as well. Theres also Godleys Cycles in Nunthorpe and Peddlers in Redcar, smaller shops, but good ones nonetheless. Bikescene has lovely kit in there if just after a browse, but i refuse to spend a penny there unless i have no other choice.

got one of their frames on my turbo; my dad knew him well and I had a few "factory" tours as a kid
(just had a google earth - think the shed's gone totally, though I don't remember exactly which building it was 🙁 )

I've always used Bikescene as my LBS, even when living in the midlands and now Scottish Borders! Always super helpful, and tend to have some very good deals on last year's models... hence the Bronson I now own... Have also used Westbrook in the past and not a bad word against them either. Choosing between the two, if you want to dribble over shiny things, use Bikescene, if you want coffee & cake then there's better options in Stokesley. Curve-ball option is to try and nab a demo bike from Bikescene and go for a pedal up in the woods? Totally do-able in a couple of hours.

At least we weren't Grangetown.

We skipped Grangetown and moved from South Bank up to middle class Eston.

Well I've got to do it all again next week anyway, dad's warfarin was too high to put holes in, so the extra suggestions will come in handy. When I grew up in Middlesbrough (Linthorpe) the bike shops were in St Barnabas Road and Parliament Rd, or Bobby's Cycles in town. I'm pretty sure Jack Taylor's place is long gone too, under the expanded road junction I think like a lot of that end of Stockton, I stuck my head round the door once as a spotty 13 year old but didn't appreciate what I saw.

Well, if you are back in the area next week, fish and chips in Great Ayton ( very good* ) and a trip to one of the bike shops either side of Ayton ( Stokesley/Guisborough ) would be my recommendation.

Good luck to your dad.

* If you do enjoy them, please don't sing their praises on here, as I won't be back in the old country until May and I *really* miss fish and chips. With mushy peas. And curry sauce.

If you're back in the area, there's a little bike shop in Ayton as well. Far end of the high street towards the bridge.

Muddodger, thats NRG youre thinking of - theyre in the process of moving to bigger premises in Thornaby. It was Biketraks a number of years ago.

(Just tell him youv'e come all the way from Donny)

Stokesley's gone down hill a bit. Guisborough is getting an M&S Food apparently so obviously on the rise, although perhaps offset by the new Weatherspoons 😆

Bobbys closed down at the end of January, the shop has been bought by Skinnergate Cycles in Stockton IIRC.
