Hi ... is this possible, and can anyone walk me through how to do it. Work uses iCal, and I have a motorola defy. I do have a Gmail account, but so far have failed miserably at syncing.

I don't know about iCal, but I've had best results with heterogeneous calendars by using the Google cloud as the glue.
I sync multiple Outlooks, an Android handset, and an iPhone; I use multiple calendars that appear in different places (mine and OH's calendars and a shared calendar). Getting it all working was a nightmare. The solution is to sync everything with Google and selectively pull back what you want.
There is software to accomplish this too. No idea if this works, I've not got an Android phone, but it worked fine with my old palm pilot back in the day.

thanks ... when trying the link from Cougar, I fail to get my gmail address 'delegation' recognised by iCal. And our work IT guru can't solve it either.
May try TimS suggestion ... here's hoping
right, I've got ical auto syncing with Google/gmail, but gmail doesn't auto sync with ical, I have to manually import stuff. Is this the norm?
