I'm looking to swap a single bulb ceiling light that is hanging from a ceiling rose for a 4 bulb unit that bolts directly to the ceiling.
There are a lot of wires inside the rose, 3 red (live), 2 black (neutral) and 2 green yellow (earth). a blue (N) and a brown (L) come out of the terminal block on the rose and the bulb hangs off these two wires.
One easy way to mount the new unit would be to use the live and neutral from the rose, but this would look untidy.
I'd like to remove the plastic part of the rose and mount the new unit to the wooden base of the rose left in the ceiling, but there seems to be a terminal block and a couple of loops of wire that would be lost with the rose. Is there any way to mount the new unit this way?
cheers
Andy
Yes. However you need a junction box hidden somewhere. Can you get to the wires from teh top? Lift the floorboards above?
However if you don't know how to do It I would advise getting a pro in.
Edit - sounds like loop in loop out

What you need to do is replicate all teh conections in a 4 way junction box under the floor and then run a single 2&e tot eh light unit
cheers TJ, I thought it may involve addings the extra wiring somewhere 🙁
its in an upstairs ceiling so access above would be from the roof space/loft so a terminal box could go in there quite easily
the rose wiring looks like this

the black wire in with the brown is your live from the switch. dont mix it with the others or you will need to call a sparky. you can terminate the wires in a connector block and enclose it in a choc block box. £1.00 from bandq cut an hole in your cieling and push it up. make sure your new light covers the hole though and you can get a good fixing.
See the wedge shaped bit with all the wires terminated in it? That should unclip from the round base, then cut the base off and you should be able to poke the strip into the ceiling above the new fitting 🙂 (it may not be up to current standards but that doesn't stop most people!)
If the new light fitting has an earth you will need to piggyback into that earth terminal.
As Chico said, but not as spooky said 😯 if you unclip the wedgey bit you will end up with three uninsulated terminals and a large bang accompanied by sparks and a blown fuse!
IMO do as Chico says but unscrew the plastic rose and the wooden one underneath then do the connections in the new fitting
Oops! I guess any sensible person would turn off the power first and then notice the problem before turning everything back on 🙂
When you disconnect the cables put some red electrical tape (or the proper red sleeving) on the black cable thats in with the brown one.
As per chico this is your switched live, and as well as making it harder to get them mixed up, the sleeving is supposed to be present to comply with regs.
