Last minute change of plans, got us thinking about a few days around Swanage for Easter.
Anyone recommend a campsite near Swanage. Quite/ tents only be good, and somewhere near some cycling as we will be taking bikes.
Been looking but nothing jumping out..
Or cool B&B even
Cheers
J.

These are usual suspects round here

Herston Yard
Toms Field
Woody Hyde

Herston Yard is the nearest to Swanage.

we've stayed here and it's gorgeous, http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=3583
Woodlands campsite.
pretty sure it's tent only, closer to wareham than swanage but not a million miles away. It's a small friendly farm campsite, not sure what their policy is with offspring, there's no playground and you will have to book as the pitches are marked out with numbered pegs but are quite spacuious.

If you want the full on 'Fawlty Towers' experience, then my mother in law has a B&B in Swanage. Cheap as chips, has a self catering kitchen, bike friendly and you might even get to meet me! She is however totally nuts. It's called the Beachway Hotel. Tell her Ken sent you.

Campsite wise, there's loads. Tom's Farm in Langton Matravers always seems to get a mention.

Oo - great response.
Having just spoken to the other half – she is more after B&B, which is maybe safer given time of year.
So Ken, will prob be phoning your mother in law..

I'll be down there late this week into next, so could show you a few trails if you're taking MTBs. Just beware that it is not a top notch b&b though!

Ok Ken,
Thanks for info– I will let her look at the options – as we have different standards of comfort...
Riding wise been looking at this as a potential, not sure if Easter will be too busy though

We had a really nice stay down there last summer but we got a B+B in Swanage. This one - which was good.

The Square and Compass in Worth Matravers looked ace but we never made it there when it was open sadly.

The area around ballard down/old harry/Studland will be heaving. I'd probably head out on the priest's way towards Worth then pick up the bridleway from Kingston to Swyre Head, ucr to Kimmeridge and back along the ridge to Corfe and along nine barrow back to swanage. Nothing too technical, a few fast descents. Studland/godlingston heath always worth an explore.

Burnbake all changed! Not open for Easter I think either this year.

Right B & B booked – girlfriend picked it and paid for it.
We were only offered 3 nights, so hopefully there is enough to do for 3 or 4 days
Long walk one day
Long ride another day
Sand castle building ??
Anything not to miss – maybe something is not immediately obvious/ out of town..
Cheers
J.

Swanage is great, my wife is from the area and she loves it. Not much to do in the town but lots to do in and around the area. Go to Brownsea Island if you get the chance.

Lovely walk along the coastal path to Worth Matravers & the fantastic Square & Compass.

Refuel on excellent cider and pasties.

Easier route back is along the Preist's Way.

I'm staying in Woody Hyde this weekend. I prefer it for riding as you can finish with a lovely little rocky descent right to the site. Plus you can get to a steam train station through a couple of fields. The train pretty much goes through the camp site which is great for the kids.

Square and Compass pub. It has the worst 'weight of patrons to width of bar' ratio of any pump I know. Always very busy with a bar only wide enough to serve each person individually. They do keep their beer well and serve up a cracking pasty though. Swing and roundabouts. I just send the missus in while I sit and gripe about it in the garden.

We generally stay at Acton Field campsite in Langton Matravers.
Basic, can be tricky to get a flat bit & often windswept but nicely in between the S&C and Swanage, plus a really short walk down to the coast path & the various sport climbing quarries.
Perfect for some 'gravel' riding too, right on the Preist's Way & good links from thereon to some nice riding.

Beer and pies always a winner.
Studland ferry to Poole looks like a good option aswell..

Thanks for all that commented.
After the initial panic of my girlfriend had subsided – we turned up Friday afternoon to a damp/ dark Swanage - “ where have you brought me “ being the remark we had a great break.
First day - Long walk on South west coast path, finishing up with beers in the square and compass.
2nd day – walk to Old harry rocks, and in the car to Lulworth cove/ Durdledoor and Tyneham
Final day – train to corfe castle and long walk back in super sunshine back to Swanage.
We took bikes, but did not get round to using them – next time though as paths looked good. I popped into Charlies and said hello to his wife and buy a few bits, which was cool.
Not so good was that we came across a heli rescue of a biker on the way back from corfe, we waited as he was lifted away.
So fingers crossed he is fine.
Traffic back to Brighton was remarkably good, after we turned back from the sandbacks ferry queue – which was huge.
Swanage was super handy as everything could be started from there – but may stay somewhere else next time..
Trust everyone had a good Easter..
J.
