Had a pretty big off this morning.. an unexpected front wheel washout.
Landed on my face, elbow and bent my left hand/wrist down towards my elbow. Lots of immediate pain and was nearly sick. Is it likely to have broken pushing it down like that?? I can move all my fingers.. straighten them and make a ball fist.. albeit in lots of pain.
It hurts the most on the back of my hand where it joins the wrist and is swollen (not hugely). How much would it hurt if broken??

To A&E with you (or at least a minor injuries unit).

FWIW it's nearly impossible to diagnose a fracture (unless there's a right-angle bend) without examining it.

It was hard to say as my helmet/face hit the floor at the same time so it was just a big thud. Luckily had my ff helmet on and all my pads

Theres other things to think of such as ligament, tendon damage which can be more of a hassle than a broken bone. Go to A&E.

It's always good to rule fractures out.

Oh well in that case then it's definatly broken and about to fall off.

Or you could just go to a & e and get it xrayed

Not supposed to eat anything before A & E innit.

If I want pancakes, I'm not going to hospital.

Might tattoo that somewhere.

having never broken anything i wasnt sure how much it should hurt if broken..

I've had breaks where I cannot possibly focus on anything else (or stop screaming or remain conscious) without pain relief, and I've had breaks where I didn't really consider that I may have a fracture until the next day..

Aye, breaks aren't that simple... It took me 10 days before I went and got my broken hand checked out the first time, and I spent that 10 days going "Nah, it can't be broken, doesn't hurt enough" and being told "Yeah, you'd know if it was broken, you wouldn't be able to move it".

So yeah, get checked out.

Sounds like it is a potential scaphoid fracture, which is notoriously difficult to diagnose.

My GF did something similar a few months back and A+E said definitely #, next day ortho consultant said probably not but we'll put a cast on anyway as she was in a lot of pain and he couldn't be certain.

5 weeks down the line, ortho consultant said not sure but physio said almost definitely fractured due to location of pain on movement.

Good luck!

Buddy tape small finger to ring finger as you may have a pinkie fracture at the metacarpal base.

If in doubt A&E.

From experience having broken both wrists I can tell you that:

a) It is possible to walk round with a broken wrist for a couple of weeks and that the result tends to be it doesn't heal right and you end up with crepitance.

b) Sometime when you break a wrist there is no doubt...

A+E, if it's a scaphoid do the jam jar test, if it's excruciatingly painful then you've probably broken it. Make sure they have a proper look at the xrays and any doubt get it plastered and pop back in 2 weeks to get it re checked as it'll be showing up more by then.

Healing vibes, as the owner of a grafted and screwed scaphoid I'll offer the following advice; DO NOT USE the injured wrist for anything, the bone has a rubbish blood supply and takes ages to heal. Let it heal and then let it heal some more. If you don't it will need a "herbert screw" and bone graft and then 12 weeks minimum to heal. I broke my late August 2011 and was only able to ride again in April 2012!

Heal fast!

Don't worry you won't be off the bike long. Just make sure you start using it as normally as possible as soon as the cast is off and DO THE PHYSIO!

The one pictured above was a plate and screws job and I was racing DH 10 weeks to the day after I broke it. 4-6 weeks off the bike with any luck!
