Planning a trip next year, end of august, early September time. Anyone been around this time? What was the weather like and would you recommend it? Thinking of staying in the Dubrovnik area.
Yes but this was as a child when it was the former Yugoslavia.
I remember fantastic weather and the old photos confirm this. Its also one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited.
Went last summer, it's an ace place.
Stayed here:

It's about 20 minutes outside Dubrovnik by bus, the guy who runs it is an absolute top bloke - will pick you up from the airport, take you back when you leave, nip you to the supermarket so you can get some shopping in etc.
Big karst landscape, lovely sea, architecture by the Venetians, things are reasonably priced etc. Locals are all very friendly, and you're not badgered to go into restaurants and bars all the time.
Weather should be good this time of year.
any good stretching out to october time?
That's ace thanks.looking for history, beaches, pool, good food and sun so seems to fit the bill.doesn't look ridiculously priced either so win win really.
October might be too late - I'd be worried about the "season" being over and everything being shut.
Croatia and Dubrovnik don't have sandy beaches iirc - just rocky. But they are pretty clean and the water is usually very good.
If you want sandy beaches, you have to go further south into Montenegro - Ulcinj.
You may also want to consider going into Montenegro and staying in Budva, which is an AMAZING mini-Dubrovnik. It is cheaper than Dubrovnik and immaculately preserved (as Dubrovnik is). I stayed in an apartment inside the city walls with balcony over the beach for peanuts - can try to find the name of the travel agent that operates the bldg if you're interested. Kotor is a stunning medieval town with amazing location, too. You can fly into Dubrovnik and drive/bus down very easily (or fly into Podgorica or Tivat - sometimes v cheap flights - also not a bad idea for going into Croatia, actually). All very friendly, relaxed and tourist-oriented, and very reasonable prices.
Spent my honeymoon in Dubrovnik, lovely place.
Hotel was this one, one of I think 2 at the time which are within the city walls.
Would recommend kayaking around Lokrum island, and exploring some of the other islands nearby too.
Cheers, Rich
great stuff :o)
I'll let you know about the October issue, well after the first week in October when I'm heading there 🙂
I know the weather won't be scorching, but I'm not really a hot weather person so that's fine, as for things being closed, I'm heading to Lopud for most of the time, I'm hoping it's not closed as there really wasn't that much there in the first place!
Depending on what you want/enjoy, don't overlook the islands.
Brac is my favorite and Bol town is the water sports centre of Croatia. It's small but very nice and laid back. A day trip to Puscica (sp?) for swimming is a must. Hvar is bigger and more cosmopolitan.
Also been up in the north and that was more touristy with quite a lot of Germans and Italians, a trip to Plitvize national park is also a must.

From konabunny's link...we stayed in Korcula on our honeymoon (did a learn-to-sail thing with Neilson) - reputed to be the borthplace of Marco Polo. It was a lovely island - and the capital, also called Korcula IIRC, was also very pretty.
Can you sail? If so, then an island hopping charter would be cool to do.
Dubrovnik was one of those cities that I expected to let me down after all the hype, but it is truly one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited. Croatia's not cheap though - but you won't find the hordes of Brits abroad that you're probably trying to avoid anyway.
It's one of the counties I've visited that I'd love to try and get back to again. We went in mid-September and had fantastic weather (but not as much wind as I'd have liked).
Enjoy.
We stayed down Dubrovnik way a few years ago now - I would recommend staying in Cavtat which is a wee place to the south, just a short bus or water taxi ride from Dubrovnik and has a really nice vibe with a collection of good inexpensive restaurants to eat at along the waterfront. In fact, I want to go back again now!
We got back two weeks ago. We did a bit of a tour from Split via Hvar to Dubrovnik. We stayed in Cavtat too (it's a great place and much cheaper) but you would of course miss out on Dubrovnik nightlife..
We stayed on Kolocep for a few days as well which has a big sandy beach, it is possible to do this as a day trip from Dubrovnik (we, in fact, went the other way..)

Take a look at the forecast just now, hot!
Went to Porec which is in the North this year, flew into Pula, just over 2 hours from Manchester.
Fantastic, lovely people, not pushy, hotel was great. Did a trip to Venice.
Would recommend it.
Did quite a few in the early 90's as part of my job.. 🙂
Mainly in the Former Yougoslavia..
Beautiful place, even then.
It's a lot nicer now I guess..
Ah yes, we too stayed in Cavtat. However there was a huge earthquake ( one of the most scary moments of my young life ) which was so bad, it killed many people in the mountains towards Albania. We stayed in Cavtat
We had no electricity for a day and everywhere was pitch black through the night.
Oh and the tiny island of Sveti Stefan is worth a visit, I think its a hotel in Montenegro.
We went to Dubrovnik a few years ago in September and for the first week visited a number of the Islands and places along the coast. Korcula, Lopud, and Hvar Town. All lovely places.
Second week was in a place called Lapad about 10 mins on the Bus (no.6!) from Dubrovnik centre, so we had the best of both worlds - quiet hotel to stay in but if you wanted somewhere to go or a night out you could go into town, which was no more than 10 mins on the bus. There was a number of restaurants near the hotel too and prices were good. We enjoyed it so much that we are going back in Sept for another little holiday. One of the nicest places i've been too and i've been fortunate enough to do a fair bit of travelling.

It hasn't yet...quite...reopened...
