Don't worry, Jon. By the end you'll only be getting about 10 emails.

It's worth remembering that this doesn't all have to be Ryvita and mung beans, and eating nice food will make the whole thing more enjoyable and effective. If you steer away from the doner and towards the shish kebab it's a very healthy meal; grilled meat, salad, bit of carb and some chilli sauce to pep up the metabolism. Plus it's effing delicious

Now now, stop poking fun at the fatties just cos you've only got a stone to lose! 😉

@andybrad - there's a similar thread on the bearbones forums (I thought cycling was meant to keep us fit and healthy? 🙄 ) where you give target weight then current weight, BMI and gut circumference. 100Kg is somewhat different on someone 1.5m tall vs someone 2m tall.

Note that BMI is more suited to a population measurement than an individual but it is at least a reasonably objective measurement. It's also aimed at generally sedentary subjects and doesn't deal with very athletic subjects, like rugby players, very well.

If you actually read the thread, yes I am sure 😉

We've already had a "standards" argument. It's lbs and 1, 3 and 6 month targets. Email with username in the profile.

I hadn't envisaged [s]it[/s] my gut being so big.....

Perfect tagline for a weight loss thread ...

Molly, you can happily join but as Jamba noted need your targets rather than just starting point.

Muggo - thanks but now the s/sheet is set up I think it should be OK. 65 data points every 2 weeks shouldn't be too big an issue.

I thought cycling was meant to keep us fit and healthy?

There's the rub. I don't particularly consider myself unhealthy (at least not in a physical sense) compared to the general population. I'm carrying too much around the middle for my liking but my cholesterol is low, BP at the upper limits of acceptable but still acceptable, I can walk up and down hills for hours, I could get on the bike and ride for several hours at a reasonable intensity and up big hills without needing to get off and push, I can sprint for a bus without collapsing with hypoxia. I'm just too heavy for my liking, and if i was lighter i could ride further / faster and with even more enjoyment.

TINAS... I will join you for some chubby action in swinley. Mondays 6.30 would suit (as would pretty much any other day apart from friday).

Live about 1 min from start of blue so pretty flexible.

I usually ride my chubby like me bike (29+) but happy to cross or single speed it if others want to mix it up a bit.

I reckon we meet start of blue just because that's easier for more people to join in. I have set up a Doddle poll so anyone who wants to join us can register:

https://doodle.com/poll/qpakah2hmvfnp5cg

I'm on my singlespeed, but may be tempted to bring the fatty out if my legs feel upto it.

The Lookout works just as well, I'm tight fisted and come from that direction anyway so refuse to drive the extra 5 minutes in order to pay to park! I'd have suggested the divecrew car park, but the potholes are getting beyond a joke!

Slightly amended tubby busting plan:
18:15 From Muzzy's and ride in from there.
18:30 from the trailhead at the Lookout.

Times are prompt and rule #87 is in effect, arrive 15minutes early if you want to faff, put your rack in the back of the car, piss, eat kebab.

I'll post an actual thread at the weekend to see if any non-tubby but still unfit want to join in.

Yea, but 90% of people are kidding themselves if they think they're the one on the right.............

@theotherjonv - That's the problem with "general" guidelines, the distribution curve is too narrow so as soon as you aren't sedentary then then guidelines don't fit. Even at slightly below my current weight, I'm good for 200Km ITTs. Obviously another 5Kg or 6Kg less weight would be even better.

At the other end of the scale I've seen a guideline for racing cyclists: take height in inches and that's your weight in Kg. So if you are 6ft tall, 72", then you should weight 72Kg. If I applied that to myself then I'd look like Keith Richards warmed up (old Spitting Image joke), I've not been that weight since around puberty!

I used a racing weight calculator for endurance athletes and it put me at about 64kg.

I fully accept that's the weight I'd need to be to race at elite level, but fortunately I don't have any plans to do so.

🙂

Can someone donate me 10kg of chub, I seem unable to get up to my racing weight... 😀

@cha****ng - yeah, about forty years too late for me to consider being at that level 😳

One calculator gives a range of 60-75Kg and another reckons 80Kg. That's a 33% difference! This running one uses something similar to what I mentioned earlier, namely 2lbs for every inch of body height then uses a fudge factor, for me that would come out at around 66Kg which is even less likely than 75Kg.

@fifeandy - I'll happily donate some of mine 😆

Can i get some thoughts on mixed nuts and raisins as a snack?

I bought some to graze on as a substitute for pastries and chocolate! But, I've just seen the calories on the pack and it's pretty awful. My colleague kindly pointed out that I could've had two crunchies for the same calories!

Surely nuts and raisins are better from a nutrition point of view despite the calories? They definitely help my feel fuller for longer so I guess there's that to factor in....

I got nothing. Was hoping for a welcome back with complimentary coupons for the local spa and fitness centre, but nope.

Worse diet plan ever.

There is of course the MTFU option; don't snack. It's more often habit than necessity.

@IHN

There is that!

I don't tend to eat breakfast though. I just never feel hungry when I wake up but then I start to feel it mid-morning. So that's were the nuts come in. I can't get through until lunch without anything so I need to find something I can eat then that also fits around work. I guess it's just moderation as Jamie says. I guess I just never clocked how calorific it is for what, to me, seems a relatively healthy option.

I haven't had a packet of crisps, or anything pastry based for 4 days now. My body has just gone into toxic shock

Option 1 - eat breakfast. Then you will get through to lunch.

Option 2 - If you do need to snack, lean protein - like diced chicken breast. For variation I make mini 'quiches' - 2 eggs, some spinach, bit of tabasco or Worcestershire sauce, all whisked up in a jug. Pour into small silicone muffin or cake cases and then microwave until done. Then you can snack on those when the time comes that you're hungry.

Yesterday was the first day for, well, er, I don't know, that my booze consumption was zero. I really, really struggled to get to sleep, I'm not sure that's a good sign 😐
