"As universities across England plan to shut courses in readiness for a new funding climate, we hear from students and academics on one course earmarked for closure. Students on Southampton University's sports studies courses are angry. They learned, when they returned from their Christmas breaks, that the university wants to begin phasing the course out from next year."

Maybe if universities hadn't been wasting time and money on sports studies courses in the first place I wouldn't have had to cough up £3k a year to pay for my physics degree.

I'm sure their £3k pays for a higher percentage of their degree cost than yours

Flaperon, what exactly are you planning to do with your Physics degree?

Probably he will get a job in banking if he has sense!

To many numpty worthless degrees. We need more science and engineering and less "hospitality management".

Degree was a few years ago (I got caught just as it changed to 3k/year but originally, into medical physics. Now I work in the aviation industry.

In defense of sports science. My neice is looking to study this in conjunction with education at Liverpool and wants to become a teacher (PE and primary school). So thats a worthwhile degree as its relevant.

how can you define a "worthwhile" degree? we need sports scientists, but we don't need many. we need geographers, cartographers, etc. So there is a need for something to ensure they are trained. Even if everyone did mech engineering we would be complaining about to many engineers and not enough something else.

The problem i guess is how many do we need and how much funding to put in.

whilst each field has its own merits I think its safe to assume that...
physics degree > sports studies degree

i mean...a degree in sports studies ffs, HND at a push

How would the Physics degree compare to say a Photography degree then?

Well of course photography is better, you get to earn more money than Ti29er and take pictures of buildings and stuff.

It may or may not be applicable to those commenting above, but a lot of people who complain about 'worthless degrees' don't actually know what is involved in the courses they deplore. Sports courses involve physiology, biology, chemistry etc.

Should 18 year olds be told what they can and can't study? Moreover, i'd guess a lot of people who do degrees don't go into jobs directly related to their course. Rather they'll use the skills they've learnt to find employment. That is what university is about.

And as deft has alluded to, STEM degrees cost the tax payer much more than arts, humanities and social science degrees to deliver.
