I can't decide.
And I have tried, at great length, to decide which I prefer.
We finished picking the straws from the allotment, and we've just picked about 6lbs of raspberries, and I NEED to know which is best.
But all I can come up with is 'whichever happens to be in my mouth at the time' and 'strawberries are the classic English summer fruit, but raspberries may be the connoisseur’s choice'

Oh, and I think they're both best when still slightly warm from the sun.

And you're a phillistine if you put sugar on them, and should be battered with a wooden punnet.

Which is best? Help me.

Sorry, but neither.

They just make me gag when I chew on them and I have to spit them out.

Neither, not on their own, not together, and certainly not in a fruits of the forest yoghurt.

I prefer rasps by a long long way, but is there not a possibility that you can live in a dualist world where you like them both the same? Its not all black and white you know.

Rasps every time. They just taste nicer, and are more consistent also. A great strawb is a wonderful thing but so hard to find.

Raspberries any day - consistant you see, unlike Stawberries.

I don't think I understand why one has to be better. 'whichever happens to be in my mouth at the time' will do me fine. 🙂

Smutty SFB! I fear typical tho...

Both, if flavoursome, in copious amounts!

Do you really select food based on whether it looks like sexual organs? 😯

"Today I believe I shall have frankfurters for tea, because they look like my willy. For pudding I shall have some big ripe melons, because they look like titties. After that I will drink milk, straight from the bottle, probably in quite a messy way."

Both. At the same time. With some blueberries and blackberries.

Oh, look, I've created a summer pudding. 😀

Quite. The perfect dessert, and one which I have been consuming twice a week all summer.

No wonder I'm fat.

From a serious choice question between rasberries and strawberries to smutty inuendo in 40 mins - another triumphal thread full of relevant feedback 🙂

FWIW, rasberries because they are consistently better, but the best strawberries probably slightly better, but sooo difficult to find. Oh and best with a little cream and sugar

for me it was 4 seconds :o)
I hope you're not suggesting that basing food choices on sensual grounds is unfounded ?

all fruit is evil. For the next 3 weeks, at least, except on Saturdays.

We've had a great strawberry crop this year, albeit some of them are quite misshapen (abit like sfb's nob end, allegedly). Raspberries, not so many but they have been so tasty.

Both they're marvellous with a good meringue and fresh whipped cream.

The best strawbs need nothing. Cream and sugar for those that are rubbish.

Basing choice on what sensual images the food conjures up - yes totally unfounded (for normal people 🙂 )
Basing choice partly on sensuality in the mouth - totally valid

Time and place for everything IMO. A few strawberries or rasberries on their own any time - perfect. A bowl of either with a LITTLE cream and sugar after dinner, accompanied by a good single malt - also perfect

IMO strawberries are best for a treat but I could have raspberries every day. As a kid I couldn't understand why McD's strawberry milkshake tasted so poorly compared to the average strawberry.

<soft fruit geek warning>
Depends on the varieties.

Glen Moy or Glen Ample is about the best raspberries you can get, unless you like your rasps properly bitter, in which case try some Glen Clova.

For strawberries with flavour, Tamella is still the bench mark, however it's a dated variety which is pretty disease prone. Symphony has pretty much the same flavour but is a slightly harder fruit.
Although you're very unlikely to find either of those in supermarkets, as they all want Elsanta for it's extended shelf life (despite the fact they have **** all flavour, and some can be used as golf ball they're that tough)

Ive recently noticed the difference between picking time and sourness.

I was eating them as I picked them at my allotment on Tuesday night - absolutely lovely - considering I was never a big fan. Then I took the same batch to work yesterday after leaving them in fridge overnight and a bit of time they had become loads sharper and tangier, rather unpleasant actually.

the photos of totty rarely come out well due to unaccountable camera shake 🙁 Anyway, the real thing is so much easier on the eye!

Don't put strawberries in the fridge!

Keep them somewhere cool, but don't chill them.

Can I just ask, is everyone elses wild Strawbs and Rasbs late this year as well? Soooo disapointed that none are around yet - spent a day searching all the usual spots on Loch Tay with a group yesterday, to no avail.

wild Strawbs

that reminds me of my little girl, she'd go out in the garden and bend right over, as toddlers can, so she could look up under the leaves, and as soon as the wild strawberries showed the first blush of pink she'd eat them 🙂 Mind you, another time I found her happily sucking a slug 🙂

Strawbs are out but Rasps aren't really due for a couple of weeks yet. That's Northumberland.

Oh, look, I've created a summer pudding.

That's the devil's work - taking delicious fruit and ruining it with soggy Wonderloaf!

Rasps are best - with single cream and meringue.

I hate those Elsanta strawberries ( that mc mentioned ^^). A good strawberry is fantastic.
Though raspberries do freeze well and we've got a good crop this year.
