wish my wife would stop smoking (weed&fags)-I'm completely sick of it (always been a non smoker). if I had my time over I wouldnt have married her-she knows this and how I feel but its too hard to compete with weed.

That's sad Rusty, you have my sympathy. I am giving up both fags and occasional weed. The weed will be a worry as I always saw it as a special treat

Its turning into a festival of Awesomeness beyond all comprehension. Considering it was just business as usual as far as smoking was concerned, just one short week ago

I was entirely persuaded by this thread to have a go at packing in. Its a week for me today. I'm really chuffed with myself. And really chuffed with you lot too. I've packed in before but it just feels like it was 'right' this time.

Cheers all 😀

Fantastic news, binners. Glad you're still with us - despite the doubts of some STW-ers! 🙄

I was entirely persuaded by this thread to have a go at packing in.

That's kind of how it was for me, too. Since then, everything seems to be falling into place.

I don't miss huddling in doorways, gripping my moistened smoke in true private dick style in the face of the smug, self-righteous majority. Now I'm a part of the smug, self-righteous majority. And it feels fantastic! 8)

Well done, mate!

I found out this morning that even though I don't feel that stressed out my fuse is particulary short, had a road rage incident this morning, normally I'm immune to road nobs, this morning I rose to it and kicked off royal in return, luckily he ran back to his car and locked himself in.
I think he saw the madness in my eyes..
If I'd have had some fags or baccy I'd have failed this morning, but I didn't and I haven't,
don't get complacent, the craving this morning was huge... 😕

Khani - unfortunate thats an effect of stopping smoking for many - a short fuse. well done for not cracking tho

seeing as the virtual snogs from emsz seems to motivate some of you would a virtual snog from me be a good motivator? Maybe in a negative way so have a fag and you will get a great big snog from a man with a very dodgy 'tache 🙂

huge respect to morgs, camo, khani, binners and all. Truly inspirational.....I have managed not to smoke cigarettes this week in honour (unfortunately the other evening smoke got the better of me, just the one though which is very good for me)

TJ...that is very scary. Reminds me of this fella who is probably enough to make anyone want to smoke 😉

Excellent work, WS!

Wouldn't worry about the 'just the one', dude. And, if you can, keep going.

As far as I'm concerned, you have a permanent invite to Club Awesome. Come on in, the air's fine! 😆

I feel honoured however full Awesomeness will only be achieved when the 'particularly sly' one in the evening has been waved goodbye too.

I have already choosen a bike as reward though 😉

I'm aiming for a Commençal Essence, Pasta Power or (if I save enough) a Ramones. 😆

I might call it Susan II.

Uh-huh, that Canyon is suh-weet!

Incentive-tastic, I would think, WS!

I've always suffered from small dream syndrome. That's why I'm aiming for an old model Commie hardtail, rather than a pimped up MoFo like a Furious (* blushes and wipes trousers *).

Good call on Sheena. That's a name with possibilities!

Good luck, fella!

That's a gorgeous machine, Khani, but pricey!

Somehow you're going to have to find a way to back-date your quit date or else work on the development of Zen patience!

Hi cheese@4p, how's it going with you?

These continual health improvements give me muchos hope and motivation.

To the ex-smokers here: how long after quitting does increased MTB endurance/gnarliness manifest?

In the following weeks and months you'll notice a steady supply of chunky green and brown crap being coughed especially when out on the bike, the riding will get easier/faster as this crap is evicted from your body. Good job all, I'm impressed with your powers of awesome.

@camo - mr 8 days is fine....but not as good as he'll be when he is known as mr 10 days, mr 2 weeks or mr "what, you used to SOMKE? 🙂

I haven't had any really outbursts.....just the seemingly increased body temp is the wierd thing. Oh, and the dreams....truely messed up, funky, spooky dreams....

you good?

truely messed up, funky, spooky dreams....

I thought it was the weed, but I went through three weeks of insomnia almost completely sleepless, spent the days staggering around like the walking dead, this was then followed by about another three weeks of very little sleep, proper messed up dreams, night terrors and waking up in a puddle of sweat at least once a night.

Pretty good, dude. 😆

I found out today that my fuse is shorter than normal, but that the fiery anger caused by other people's incompetence/idiocy/face 😯 dies out pretty quickly and that normalcy returns, more or less, within a couple of minutes.

Weird dreams here too... not the sweaty terror kind, but quite unsettling and creepy.

if it helps, i've just been out for my local 'fast' ride - the first one since giving up

Rather than hanging of the back, like in the summer, i was quite comfortable running at the front

Can't beleive what a difference 2 months of 'smoke free' does for your fitness!

This was after a proper sh*t day at work where i really wanted to smoke - the bike quickly killed my stress and tension!!

Keep at it boys!! 🙂

The bike definatly helps, I've been out every day since I gave up, either before or after work, and the stress melts away after ten minutes.
My legs hurt now tho... 😥

Go guys! Good for you!

Giving up smoking is still one of the things I've done that I'm really proud of - takes a lot of willpower, so much respect to all of you.

As an ex-smoker, I'm afaid I'm still waiting for extra mtb gnarliness to appear, but I continue to ride like a complete mincer 😳 But am definately fitter - it just turned me into a roadie instead.

If it helps to encourage your motivation, extra virtual snogs coming to all you fresh-breathed chaps (and chapesses?) 🙂

As I have said before, I have tried and failed at this being a non-smoker thing a fair few times. This time, its working. The support of the Mrs and you lot are really getting me through.

Well over a week now and it's going great. Strangely experiencing some chest pains at night though. I think my body is trying to adjust to the new regime and getting confused.
Life actually seems much better as a non smoker so why go back to the fags?
Cos they are evil wicked tricksters, that's why.

Today should have been temptation morning.

I...

... was told in no uncertain times by Mrs 16 that she got no sleep last night as a result of my restlessness and snoring 😯 . (early morning grumpy relationship stress)
... noticed a rear wheel puncture as I was leaving the 16 household (late for work stress)
... coped with my six year old enthusiastically pinching essentials from my puncture repair kit whilst yelling utterly random advice at me and flicking water in my face (not now, son, I'm concentrating stress)
... stood outside with six floors of office people during a fire drill. Most of the ones near me were smoking and going "ooh, that's better" (odour trigger craving stress)

I squared up to evil Dr. Cig, looked him straight in the face, squinted my eyes Clint Eastwood style and grunted: "no way, punk, you're not taking me down this time..."

* is chuffed *

It's the lesser of the two evils though.

In time your drinking will go back to normal as well.

Be thankful for the smoking ban in public places as well. I can remember trying to give up when I was in my 20s and would often fail when I went out drinking on a Friday evening in the pub surrounded by smokers.

Khani, Morgs & Binners - Awesome as always!

Long ride is provisionally planned for this weekend... Hopefully, I'll notice a distinct improvement in performance, stamina and general all-round sensual buffness... might be a bit early for that, though, but I'm living in hope! 😆

Well.....

Ive been away since Thursday. I was helping out at my sisters school on Friday in my Royal Britiah Legion persona. Had a lovely weekend away with the better half and my sister & nro-in-law (first time introductions). Could have been a very stressful weekend but no smokes here!

I'm a fortnight smokefree on Tuesday. Go us!

Scuzz - join us....turn your back on the dark side 😉

The power of the TJ threat is strong ... the mere thought of him "puckering up" should be sufficient to deter even the hardest of smokers 🙂

I think I may join you guys...not been that active on this here board for a good while and have been off the bike for a good number of months too...went for a short ride the other day and was absolutley knackered and coughing up all sorts of crap, doing climbs that I would clear in a heartbeat only 6 months ago. This will be attempt number 3 for me, 2012 will also see my 30th year, so really dont want to still be smoking at 30!!

What's all this giving up smoking nonsense? Pft.

Smoking improves your lung capacity and general fitness. Scientific fact. I have proved this by being faster up hills than most folk I ride with, and that's on a SS too. In fact I quite like to ride past them on climbs, then sit waiting at the top with a cig; breaks their spirit. 😀

I had a lovely, juicy, succulent and nutritious cig just about an hour ago actually, when I went down to the offie to pick up some beers...

(Sobs)

TBH I don't actually want to give up; I smoke very little really, only a few cigs a week. I'll have a few if I'm out drinking maybe though; such situations seem to go with smoking somehow, probbly cos smoking in pubs used to b normal. Pubs etc are much nicer places for everyone now, especially staff.

I won't smoke in the house though. Just don't feel the compulsion. I sometimes go weeks on end without a cig.

But I don't get eaten up with guilt if I do smoke. I think that guilt thing is what messes with people's heads too much.

Elf, all that tells me is that your riding mates are really crap.

No; it's just that I'm awesome. 😀

Been avidly following this thread and v impressed with the folk that have quit the deadly cigs!

Personally I have a medical condition that dictates smoking is probably the worst thing possible for my health, does that deter me? Nope, I'm an idiot...Peer pressure/family haven't helped my quit campaign to date so I'm very keen to join round two of the stw quitters club starting tomorrow morning, anyone care to join me?

Elf, for those addicted to fags where it's causing a strain on their family pockets and possibly giving themselves a terminal disease that their family will have to watch eat their loved one alive, and deal with the fallout - they should feel guilty.

If you can have one or two fags a week, you're probably ok.

Fenred - get it done.
