Who actually finds themselves sprinting flat out (not as part of football etc) in their lives as an adult? I mean lots of people run, but it's always distance running.

On tonight's run I got bored, so I started doing flat out sprints - bearing in mind I used to be an out and out sprinter at school. The first few were a bit short - once I got up to speed it all felt wrong like I was going to hurt something. Got better after a while though.. got really into it.

Speed is my birthright!

well anyone that trains with any effectiveness i presume ....

even distance runners will sprint from time to time if they want to improve their time ....

I had to run for the bus the other night.

I wasn't even out of breath or sore after.

I celebrate with a beer.

I do a bit of sprinting now and again. Used to do a lot more at BMF three or four years ago though. http://www.britmilfit.com/index.aspx

Al - your words of wisdom are now a Haiku:

i ran for the bus
i didn't get out of breath
beer is my prize

carry on talking about whatever it was...

(yes i do sprints; i put a couple into my longer runs)

I tried to run flat out down a hill 2 weeks ago. Still limping 😉

A few years ago I did sprint intervals on footy pitches and squash courts - should start again really to get rid of some fat

It is, or should be, a key part of any distance runners schedule.

I do it when I'm doing my daily wild-animal hunt.

In 'normal life' on civvy street there is little need to be a fast sprinter.

If you're a member of the emergency services, an infantryman or, maybe, a farmer you might occasionally need to sprint after somebody/thing.

I used to be a reasonably quick sprinter in my rugby days, but I'm slower now.

try this on a football pitch in the park...

start on the goal line.
run to the edge of the goal area - 15press ups, run back to goal line.
run to halfway line - 12burpees, run back to 12yard box.
15sit ups - run back to goal ine.
rest in plank position for 30 seconds.

repeat a couple of times.

another one is to start off on a corner post. Sprint the length of the pitch to the next corner post, then jog the shorter line until the next corner, sprint the length... repeat several times until unable to continue.

Another really hard one is starting at the goal line, run full length of the pitch and do ten star jumps the far end. Run back and do nine star jumps, run back again eight star jumps and so on until zero.

seriously need a beer after that lot !

Geronimo - spring useful in football/rugby etc - as you pointed out.

It makes me feel all-round fit, and that my body works the way it's meant to.. I think. Now I need to work on my upper body too.
