My current one has stopped working over the weekend so I'm looking to replace it, I could spend between £40 or £250 on them, the only difference seems to be different brushing modes and timers on them.
Do the more expensive ones offer anything more than that? ( I can't really spot anything that's going to clean my teeth better )
I have the £250 but purchased when half price from boots.
I use one setting- I've always used one setting.
On the four previous sonic toothbrushes over the past 10 years I've only used one setting.
Got the diamond clean from Costco for £97 their top of the range brush, way superior to my old sonicare and oralb3d in dentist like clean everytime!
Mrs bought the top one that was heavily discounted in boots. Its awesome. I use the whitener mode and it does work!
What does the sonicare do? Is it like just a spinning toothbrush like the oral b's or does it actually do something different?
All sonicare toothbrushes use the same technology.
If you want USB charging or a funny glass charger to fill with toothpasty dribble get the expensive one, if not buy whichever fits your budget....
Ps there will be different modes but these are gimmicks. All you really need is the two minute timer at normal power.
@officerfriendly - The head doesn't move like an OralB (rotating and oscillating) so you will still need to use a good brushing technique
Oral b gave no where near the clean the diamond clean does. Its Sonic versus oscillating. Technique according to Phillips is just gentle move from tooth to tooth, let the brush do the work.
Get the one with the whitening mode and don't spend a penny more unless you want the USB charing which IMO is not really worth it as the battery lasts so long on them.
I've got the one with the UV steriliser charger which tbh I think it a gimmic but it was cheap on offer from Amazon at Xmas. I tried the top of the range Colgate one and sent it back as it was horrible. Never been a fan of the Oral B type but most dentists seem to rate them. I keep going back to Sonicare and the heads are reasonable from Costco.
My last one broke just after 2 years which was annoying. Failure caused by mould eating through the flexible silicone seal at the top. The new ones have an updated design.
Ps technique with the sonicare is just gentle move it round your teeth with light pressure. No 'brushing' and don't press hard.
I've had about 6 sonicare brushes break. Thankfully Boots keep exchanging them but when they stop i won't be buying another.
I've had sonicare and oral b. Prefer sonicare myself. Running costs vary depending where you buy brushes from. Cheaper online than in supermarkets. If you want to buy a more expensive electric brush visit a dental exhibition where phillips will sell you them for about £40 + Vat, mi was £250 in boots £60 to me!
I went out with a Boots no7 girl once. She won a top of the line Oral B electric toothbrush in a sales competition and gave it to me. I hated it, too harsh. I exchanged it at Boots (didnt need a reciept!!) for a top of the line Sonicare (£250) and love it, as much as you can love a toothbrush. That was over 2 years ago and still going strong. Id buy another.
The more expensive ones have a much better cleaning action, they are not just packed with gimmicks. Ive just been through this, our expensive one broke, so i bought a 60ish quid one which was total pants...not the same brushing action at all. Phillips do a money back offer, so i returned it and got a Diamond Clean one. It's brilliant, feels like a scale and polish from the dentist.

If I was doing lots of travelling then the usb would be a useful feature as its one less charger to carry.
the clean and white mode gives me that sharp feeling to the back of my front teeth. Just like when I go to the dentist.
Dont underestimate the benefit of fresh heads on them though.
Mine did this so I took it apart and dried out the insides and is now fine again. There are a couple of you tube clips showing how to take them apart but its very straight forward. I figured it was already dead so had nothing to loose.

But will a brush head on a none diamond clean, clean as well/same performance?
Do you find clean/white mode too harsh then if left with sharp feeling?

It's a step up from my old one with the clean/white mode, using it for the first time this morning it did feel like I had a scale and polish, having a new brush head on it might have helped as well.
